The infamous Mirai botnet has resurfaced with devastating force, fueling a global wave of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks that has left organizations reeling. This latest evolution, powered by spinoffs like the Murdoc botnet, exploits vulnerabilities in IoT devices, targeting regions across North America, Europe, and Asia.
Researchers at Qualys and Trend Micro have uncovered two major campaigns linked to Mirai variants. One campaign exploits critical flaws in Avtech cameras and Huawei routers, while another hijacks devices like TP-Link routers and Hikvision IP cameras using weak credentials.
Together, they create sprawling botnets capable of launching large-scale, resource-exhausting DDoS attacks. Shilpesh Trivedi, lead security researcher at Qualys said:
