Redmond, WA – December 5, 2024-Microsoft’s mandatory TPM 2.0 for Windows 11 sparks backlash as Windows 10’s end nears. Over 61% of users face forced upgrades or $30 fees for extended support.

Microsoft’s decision to make TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) a “non-negotiable” requirement for Windows 11 is causing waves among users, especially as Windows 10’s end-of-life date looms on October 14, 2025.

This move has ignited frustration, with many calling it a forced upgrade strategy and questioning its timing as over 61% of Windows systems globally still run Windows 10.

TPM 2.0, a hardware-based security chip, is critical for enhancing protection against cyberattacks, says Microsoft. Steven Hosking, Microsoft’s senior product manager said:

Adding to the uproar, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 users unwilling to switch to Windows 11 must pay $30 for Extended Security Updates (ESU) to maintain system security for one more year. Critics argue that this “pay-to-delay” strategy further alienates loyal users.

Despite these frustrations, Microsoft defends its stance, emphasizing that TPM 2.0 is essential for future-proofing Windows 11, especially as AI integration advances. However, the backlash highlights growing tension between corporate objectives and user convenience.

Meanwhile, Windows 11 adoption still lags at just under 35% globally, even three years post-launch. The decision has left many scrambling for alternatives or workarounds to bypass the TPM check, though Microsoft warns this could leave systems vulnerable.
