Redmond, WA – February 5, 2025-Microsoft is removing its free VPN, hiking Microsoft 365 prices, and forcing AI integration, leaving users frustrated and looking for alternatives.
In a stunning move, Microsoft has axed its free VPN service, leaving millions of Microsoft 365 users without a built-in privacy tool. But that’s not all—the tech giant is also raising subscription prices while forcing its AI-powered Copilot onto users, sparking outrage and frustration among customers.
Starting February 28, Microsoft 365’s Defender VPN will be retired, stripping away a critical security feature that protected users’ data on public Wi-Fi. No clear reason was given for the decision, other than a vague claim of “investing in new areas”. A cybersecurity analyst Jake Morrison said:
Microsoft is prioritizing AI while quietly stripping away security features. This move forces users to pay extra for third-party VPNs.
As if the VPN removal wasn’t enough, Microsoft is also hiking Microsoft 365 subscription prices:
- Personal Plan: $99.99/year (up from $69.99)
- Family Plan: $129.99/year (up from $99.99)
The price increases are linked to the forced integration of Copilot AI in Word, Excel, and other Microsoft apps—whether users want it or not. longtime Microsoft 365 user Sarah Benson said:
They’re making AI a must-have and charging us more for it. If I don’t need Copilot, why should I pay extra?
With Microsoft pushing AI while cutting essential security tools, many users are considering canceling their subscriptions or switching to cheaper alternatives.
