Redmond, January 13, 2025Microsoft sues hackers exploiting Azure AI with stolen credentials, targeting global AI platforms to create harmful content. Security measures tightened.

Microsoft has launched a legal battle against a hacking group accused of exploiting its Azure AI services to create harmful and offensive content. This unprecedented move comes after the company’s Digital Crimes Unit (DCU) discovered a sophisticated hacking-as-a-service operation that used stolen Azure API keys to bypass security controls.

The hackers allegedly scraped customer credentials, accessed Azure OpenAI services, and monetized their operations by providing malicious actors with tools and instructions to generate harmful AI-driven content, including offensive imagery. According to court filings:

Microsoft revealed that the group used a reverse proxy tool named de3u” and an illegal domain, aitism[.]net,” to facilitate their activities. A Microsoft spokesperson said:

Cybersecurity expert Jason Marks called the incident a wake-up call” for the tech industry. AI tools like Azure OpenAI are powerful, but in the wrong hands, they can wreak havoc,” he noted.

The breach, first detected in mid-2024, targeted Microsoft’s AI systems and other platforms like AWS and Google Cloud. This incident raises serious concerns about the security of cloud-based AI services and their misuse by malicious actors.

Microsoft has since revoked access, secured its systems, and obtained a court order to seize the hackers’ infrastructure. The company continues to work with law enforcement to identify and stop these bad actors.
