San Francisco, January 27, 2025 — Meta’s Llama AI framework faced a critical RCE flaw via deserialization, exposing it to cyber threats. The issue has been patched, but risks remain for AI systems.
Meta’s cutting-edge AI framework, Llama, has fallen victim to a critical flaw that exposed it to potential remote code execution (RCE) attacks. The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2024-50050, has sent shockwaves through the tech community, highlighting the risks inherent in AI infrastructure.
The flaw lay in the Python Inference API implementation of Llama’s Llama Stack, which deserialized untrusted data using the insecure pickle format. This enabled attackers to inject malicious objects into the system, potentially executing arbitrary code on the host server. Security researcher Avi Lumelsky of Oligo Security emphasized the risk:
This vulnerability could have devastating effects if leveraged by attackers, making it a wake-up call for AI developers.
Meta swiftly addressed the issue after its disclosure in September 2024, replacing the flawed pickle serialization with a safer JSON-based implementation in its 0.0.41 update. While the company downplayed the severity, experts warn of broader implications for the security of large language models (LLMs).
This isn’t an isolated case. In recent months, TensorFlow’s Keras framework faced a similar issue, and vulnerabilities in OpenAI’s ChatGPT highlighted how AI frameworks are becoming a hotbed for cyber threats. Mark Vaitzman, a cybersecurity expert, noted:
LLMs are not just tools—they're evolving into attack vectors, and their misuse could amplify cyber threats at unprecedented scales.
As AI becomes more deeply integrated into industries, ensuring the security of these frameworks is no longer optional but essential.
