March 18, 2025 – Merkur’s data breach exposes 800K players as unregulated casinos fail to secure sensitive user data, sparking outrage and privacy concerns!
In a shocking cybersecurity scandal, personal data from over 800,000 Merkur casino players has been exposed, raising concerns over unregulated online gambling platforms.
The breach, linked to The Mill Adventure’s software, not only compromised ID cards, account details, and gaming histories but also involved casinos operating outside Germany’s regulatory framework.
The breach surfaced after cybersecurity expert Lilith Wittmann discovered an unsecured API, allowing unauthorized access to highly sensitive player data.
Shockingly, some affected casinos weren’t even on Germany’s gambling regulator’s whitelist, meaning players were unknowingly trusting unregulated platforms with their private information. Markus Henke, a cybersecurity analyst warned:
This is a ticking time bomb, players' identities, financials, and gaming habits are now potential targets for cybercriminals.
The Merkur Group confirmed the breach, stating the vulnerability stemmed from a misconfigured GraphQL interface, which was reportedly fixed on the same day. However, this hasn’t stopped public outrage, as players demand accountability.
Merkur is downplaying the incident, but the reality is terrifying. If unregulated casinos are involved, where else has our data gone?
This breach raises serious concerns about unregulated gambling platforms, as lax security and lack of oversight make them prime targets for hackers.
