The manufacturing industry is under siege, with 71% of ransomware attacks targeting the sector in 2023, according to a Dragos report. This alarming figure exposes vulnerabilities in manufacturing systems, often relying on outdated technologies and minimal cybersecurity budgets.
Ransomware attacks in manufacturing disrupt operations, causing devastating downtime and financial losses for companies operating on razor-thin margins. A cybersecurity analyst Lesley Carhart said:
The threat is real and growing. Manufacturers must act now to protect their networks and critical infrastructure.
The threats come in three forms: commodity ransomware attacks, insider threats, and state-sponsored espionage. Each poses unique challenges, from production shutdowns to the theft of intellectual property.
Notably, insider threats are often unintentional, stemming from employees bypassing security measures for efficiency, which opens doors for cybercriminals. Legacy systems and flat network structures exacerbate the issue. Carhart added.
Globally, manufacturing remains a prime target due to insufficient resources dedicated to cybersecurity.
To combat these threats, experts recommend immediate action:
