Davenport, February 20, 2025 –Lee Enterprises suffered a ransomware attack, disrupting operations and raising concerns over a potential data leak. Investigation ongoing!
Lee Enterprises, one of the largest media companies in the U.S., has fallen victim to a devastating ransomware attack, raising fears of a major data breach. The attack, which occurred on February 3, 2025, targeted the company’s IT network, encrypting critical data and stealing files.
The publishing giant, which owns over 70 newspapers and 350 digital publications, confirmed the incident in an SEC filing. Investigators are still assessing whether confidential employee and consumer data was leaked, but cybersecurity experts warn that hackers rarely leave without taking valuable information.
Cybersecurity expert Nathaniel Morales said:
This isn’t just about system disruption; it’s about stolen data,. If personal or financial records were compromised, the fallout could be catastrophic.
Lee Enterprises has hired cybersecurity experts to investigate and determine the extent of the breach. Early reports confirm that hackers encrypted company files and extracted sensitive data, a classic double-extortion ransomware tactic. FBI cyber analyst Mike Herrington warned:
Media companies are prime targets. They hold vast amounts of user data and critical infrastructure. This attack could have serious consequences.
If personal data was stolen, Lee Enterprises will be required to notify all affected individuals. However, the company has yet to confirm the full scope of the breach. Experts urge anyone potentially impacted to stay alert for identity theft and fraud risks.
