In a new cyber espionage campaign, Iranian hackers linked to the TA455 group are leveraging fake job offers to infiltrate the aerospace industry. This campaign uses dream job” lures, enticing targets with fake recruitment messages while concealing the SnailResin malware within seemingly legitimate job application files.
The TA455 group, also tracked as UNC1549, is closely aligned with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and has a history of high-stakes cyber espionage. The hackers use a multi-layered infection strategy to evade detection.
Victims are lured via fake recruiting websites and LinkedIn profiles, where they are prompted to download files containing malware disguised as job-related documents. When opened, the malware grants remote access to attackers, enabling data theft, credential harvesting, and deeper network infiltration.
This multi-stage infection process shows a high level of planning. By mimicking North Korean tactics, TA455 is complicating attribution efforts and ensuring stealth in operations.
The campaign employs GitHub repositories to hide command-and-control servers, blending malicious actions within legitimate web traffic. Targeting aerospace, aviation, and defense sectors, the TA455 operation reaches across the Middle East, impacting regions like Israel, Turkey, and the UAE.
The sophisticated tactics mirror techniques pioneered by North Korea’s Lazarus Group, leading experts to speculate possible knowledge-sharing or imitation between these cyber operatives.
This approach amplifies the risks in industries like aerospace, where sensitive data is a prime target.
This latest tactic has cybersecurity experts urging companies in high-risk sectors to heighten internal awareness and bolster phishing defenses.
