Salt Lake City, January 8, 2025 — Granite School District faces backlash over delayed credit monitoring after a massive breach exposed data of 450,000. Families demand swift action.
Parents and staff at Utah’s Granite School District are voicing frustration over delays in promised credit monitoring services after a massive cybersecurity breach exposed sensitive data of approximately 450,000 individuals.
The breach, caused by an employee inadvertently downloading a corrupted file in September, compromised the personal information of current and former students, as well as district employees.
Superintendent Ben Horsley assured families last fall that the district’s insurance provider would handle protection services, including credit monitoring and breach-related updates. However, as of January 2025, these services remain unavailable.
This delay is unacceptable. Families deserve immediate protection after such a massive failure.
The breach exposed names, addresses, and other sensitive data, leaving families vulnerable to identity theft. District officials have expressed their “incredible frustration” with the insurance company tasked with setting up the promised services. An email update sent to families on January 3 indicated that the district expects monitoring services to launch by mid-January.
It’s concerning that it’s taking this long. They need to do more to ensure our information is safe.
The district has created a dedicated webpage for updates and resources, but many feel the response has been insufficient given the severity of the breach. Officials have emphasized their commitment to transparency but declined to comment on camera.
This incident highlights the growing risks of cybersecurity vulnerabilities in education systems and the critical need for swift, reliable responses to protect affected individuals.
