In a bold move to outpace rivals, Google announced that its advanced AI features across Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and other Workspace apps are now free. But there’s a catch: the cost of Workspace plans has quietly gone up by $2 per user per month. The irony? While AI is now more accessible, businesses will still feel the pinch.

Jerry Dischler, Google’s president of cloud applications, justified the price hike, saying:

Cost was a barrier for many companies to embrace AI. By including AI in all plans, we’re eliminating that hurdle while ensuring sustainable growth.

Previously exclusive to the $20/month Gemini Business plan, Workspace AI tools now come standard. These features include email summaries, spreadsheet design suggestions, automated meeting note-takers, and the Gemini chatbot—a powerhouse capable of intelligent research and multi-app searches.

However, the price bump means companies will pay $14 per user monthly instead of the earlier $12. While the increase may seem marginal, for large teams, it adds up quickly. Google’s move mirrors Microsoft’s decision last November to integrate AI into its Microsoft 365 plans, reflecting a competitive AI race among tech giants.
