New York, December 31, 2024 –Google AIO expands its dominance in SERPs, reducing organic traffic for publishers. Industries like healthcare and finance see significant impacts.
Google’s AI Overviews (AIO) are increasingly taking over search engine results pages (SERPs), edging out organic links and raising alarm among publishers and SEO experts. New data from BrightEdge reveals that AIO now occupies up to 800 pixels of screen real estate above the fold, leaving minimal visibility for traditional search results.
Introduced in May 2024, Google AIO generates direct answers from its AI model, reducing the need for users to click on publisher links. This trend has led to significant traffic declines for publishers, who rely on organic clicks for revenue. Jim Yu, CEO of BrightEdg said:
The dominance of AIO in SERPs is squeezing out publishers. This is not just a traffic problem; it’s an existential threat to organic search.
BrightEdge’s research highlights that AIO coverage is expanding rapidly, particularly in industries like healthcare, eCommerce, and B2B technology. By 2025, health-related searches are expected to trigger AIO over 80% of the time, while finance and entertainment queries will grow exponentially.
Publishers are urged to adapt by optimizing content for AI-friendly formats, such as schema tags and layered intent responses. “Citations are the new SEO,” BrightEdge’s report suggests, emphasizing the need for publishers to ensure their content is cited by AIO.
Google’s increased focus on AI-driven answers could further diminish the role of organic search. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, recently underscored the company’s commitment to enhancing AI integrations, signaling even less visibility for traditional links.
