New York, November 8, 2024-A stealthier variant of the Godfather malware is back, targeting 500 banking and cryptocurrency apps across multiple countries. Fake login pages replace genuine ones, posing a major threat to user security.
In a chilling escalation, cybersecurity researchers at Cyble have identified a more sophisticated version of the Godfather malware, now actively targeting over 500 banking and crypto apps globally.
Expanding its geographic reach, the malware has moved beyond the U.S. and Europe to threaten users in Japan, Singapore, and Greece, among others. Unlike older versions, the new variant has abandoned traditional overlay attacks in favor of fake login pages that seamlessly replace genuine app interfaces.
This variant is incredibly dangerous. By switching to fake login URLs, the malware has eliminated one of the last remaining indicators of its presence.
The malware leverages native code, making it harder to detect and analyze, while also using minimal permissions to bypass security systems on infected devices.
The malware’s primary tactic involves intercepting login attempts by closing real apps and displaying realistic phishing screens instead. When users try to access their accounts, Godfather hijacks the session, loading a phishing URL that appears authentic.
With automated actions mimicking real user gestures, this malware can steal credentials undetected.
Researchers also discovered that the Godfather malware is being distributed through malicious sites masquerading as official services, including an imitation of Australia’s MyGov site. These sites prompt users to download deceptive APK files, which install the malware.
As a precaution, Cyble advises users to install apps only from official app stores, regularly update software, and enable two-factor authentication.
