Germany: The Interior Minister of Germany “Thomas de Maiziere” has ordered to install facial recognition system at all airports and train stations of the country.
In an interview with Bild am Sonntag newspaper, de Maiziere confirmed that the order is a result of two Jihadist attacks in Germany which took place last month. The Interior Minister further explained that such technology had been used in past to identify famous celebrities and politicians, and now it will aid in detecting suspects and criminal at airports & railway stations.
Moreover, the technology has been already under a testing phase to find out unattended luggage after a specific duration.
“I would like to use this kind of facial recognition technology in video cameras at airports and train stations. Then, if a suspect appears and is recognized, it will show up in the system.”

Although, various countries have utilized similar detection mechanisms, Germany has been unsure to accept the technology, due to the threat of misuse by secret police “Stasi” in East Germany.
However, the two Jihadist attacks in July including one on a train in Wurzburg and other at a music festival in Ansbach left the German government with no option except to choose facial recognition system for citizens’ security.
In addition to this, representatives from world’s biggest beer festival “Munich’s Oktoberfest”, have demanded to put a ban on rucksacks and impose security checks at entrances and boundary walls. The Interior Minister favored Munich’s Oktoberfest representatives and stated that prohibiting the rucksacks at major events will be helpful.
Considering the situation, security researchers have been bothered with the potential threats regarding facial identification system. If the detection system gets hacked, then it will allow various criminals to bypass the security, leading to devastating outcomes.
