Nairobi, December 23, 2024-Holiday scams surge as cybercriminals exploit festive cheer, targeting shoppers with fake deals, government payment schemes, and data-stealing ploys.

As holiday cheer fills the air, cybercriminals are seizing the moment with sophisticated scams targeting distracted shoppers and festive revelers. Cybersecurity experts have identified a surge in fraud schemes preying on the holiday rush, exploiting consumer trust and eagerness for deals.

Prominent among these schemes are fake holiday shops, designed to mimic legitimate e-commerce websites offering irresistible discounts. Victims unknowingly share personal and financial data, fueling a dark market of stolen information.

Another scam lures victims with promises of free mobile data, spreading through WhatsApp chains and tricking users into disclosing sensitive details. Olga Svistunova, Senior Analyst at Kaspersky said:

Some scammers impersonate government agencies, promising holiday payments in return for personal details. In Kenya and Nigeria, this tactic has deceived thousands, undermining trust in public institutions.

Even seemingly innocent holiday cake recipes have become tools for theft, as scammers collect credit card information under the guise of a small payment. A cybersecurity expert Adewale Okeke says:

To stay safe, experts recommend verifying websites before purchases, avoiding unsolicited links, and using robust cybersecurity tools.
