Washington, D.C., January 15, 2025 —The FBI eradicated China-linked PlugX malware from 4,200+ U.S. computers in a multi-agency crackdown. Cybersecurity efforts demonstrate global collaboration in tackling advanced threats.

In a bold move to safeguard U.S. cybersecurity, the FBI has eliminated PlugX malware from over 4,200 computers nationwide. This China-linked malware, operated by the notorious Mustang Panda group, was used to steal sensitive information from individuals, businesses, and government entities.

The operation, spanning multiple months and involving international collaboration, targeted PlugX’s worm-like ability to spread via USB devices and infiltrate systems. French law enforcement and cybersecurity experts from Sekoia.io played a key role in dismantling the infrastructure behind the malware, including its command-and-control (C2) servers.

The malware, allegedly developed with funding from the Chinese government, had been active since 2014, targeting organizations in the U.S., Europe, and the Indo-Pacific region. Recent attacks included European shipping firms and governments in Taiwan and Japan.

The FBI used court-authorized warrants to deploy commands that deleted PlugX from infected systems without impacting their functionality. Computer owners are now being notified through internet service providers about the malware’s removal. Cybersecurity analyst Sarah Carter noted:
