Jacksonville, December 6, 2024 – The FBI warns of Chinese hackers exploiting cross-platform texts between Android and iPhone users. Avoid sharing sensitive data and use encrypted apps to stay safe.
In a chilling revelation, the FBI has issued an urgent alert to Android and iPhone users following a cyberattack by Chinese hackers. Dubbed the “Salt Typhoon” group, these hackers have exploited vulnerabilities in text communications between the two platforms, compromising metadata and leaving millions exposed.
Eric Franklin of Scarlett Cyber Security Group stated:
This unprecedented attack targeted major telecom giants like T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T. The hackers have successfully accessed vast amounts of metadata, and the lack of encryption in cross-platform texting only amplifies the threat.
The FBI urges users to avoid sharing sensitive information, such as Social Security numbers and bank details, through texts. Cross-platform messaging between Android and iPhones is particularly at risk, as it lacks end-to-end encryption, a basic safeguard many users take for granted.
According to Pew Research, the average American sends or receives 40 texts daily. The FBI’s warning hits close to home, as text messaging remains a staple of modern communication. Franklin stressed:
If you’re using older devices or outdated software, update immediately. Better yet, switch to encrypted apps like Signal or WhatsApp for critical conversations.
The attack is a stark reminder of the growing cybersecurity threats in our digital age. Apple plans to release a vital update later this month, allowing users to switch their default messaging system for added security.
