The Hague, December 4, 2024 –Europol dismantles MATRIX, an encrypted platform used by criminals. Arrests and seized data expose international drug, arms, and money laundering schemes.
In a stunning breakthrough, Europol announced the dismantling of MATRIX, a sophisticated encrypted messaging platform used by international criminals to orchestrate drug trafficking, arms deals, and money laundering.
The operation, coordinated by law enforcement across Europe, seized over 40 servers, intercepted millions of messages, and led to multiple arrests, including the platform’s alleged Lithuanian operator.
MATRIX was designed to shield its users from law enforcement, but no criminal network is beyond our reach.
The platform offered encrypted messaging, voice calls, and even anonymous web browsing, primarily on modified Google Pixel devices. Its exclusivity required users to be invited, creating a false sense of security among its criminal clientele.
The takedown was part of a massive collaboration involving France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, and Lithuania, with authorities deciphering over 2.3 million messages in 33 languages. These communications revealed details of large-scale illicit operations, linking MATRIX users to serious crimes.
This operation underscores the power of international cooperation in combating cybercrime. The interception of real-time messages sends a clear warning to others relying on encrypted platforms for illegal activities.
During the raids, authorities seized €145,000 in cash, €500,000 in cryptocurrencies, nearly 1,000 mobile devices, and critical server data. MATRIX users visiting the platform now see a splash page announcing its takedown and Europol’s chilling warning: “It’s not the first time, and it won’t be the last.”
