Brussels, December 10, 2024 –Europol dismantled a phone phishing gang targeting elderly victims across Europe, recovering millions in stolen funds and arresting eight suspects.
Europol has struck a major blow against cybercriminals, dismantling a phone phishing gang that defrauded victims of millions across Europe. The operation, conducted in collaboration with Belgian and Dutch authorities, resulted in eight arrests, seizure of luxury goods, and recovery of large sums of cash.
The gang targeted elderly victims across ten countries, posing as bank representatives or police officers to gain access to financial information. In one chilling tactic, they even visited victims’ homes under false pretenses.
The stolen funds were funneled into extravagant lifestyles, featuring high-end parties, luxury watches, and designer jewelry. Europol spokesperson Marissa Dekker said:
This operation sends a strong message: cybercriminals have nowhere to hide. We are committed to dismantling these networks.
The investigation began in 2022, with Europol facilitating real-time intelligence sharing and financial tracking. Dirk Van Houten, a Belgian prosecutor said:

Authorities raided 17 locations in Belgium and the Netherlands, uncovering electronic devices, a firearm, and evidence linking the suspects to large-scale fraud. Experts estimate the gang caused millions of euros in damages.
