Washington State faces an unprecedented crisis as data breaches soar to alarming new heights, surpassing the state’s population for the first time in history.

According to Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s latest report, over 11.6 million breach notifications were issued to Washingtonians this year—a staggering 5 million more than the previous record set in 2021.

This dramatic spike is fueled by escalating cyberattacks, with ransomware alone accounting for 78% of breaches, up from 68% in 2023. Major incidents, including breaches at Comcast and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, dubbed mega breaches,” affected over a million individuals each.

Social Security numbers were compromised in nearly 70% of reported breaches, making them the most targeted personal data. Victims now face long-term risks of identity theft, financial fraud, and personal anguish.
