A major cyberattack has crippled Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), forcing the institution to shut down its entire network. This unprecedented attack has halted lectures, educational activities, and essential online systems, leaving students and staff in disarray.
On January 12, 2025, TU/e’s ICT team detected unusual activity on its servers, triggering immediate action to prevent further damage. Patrick Groothuis, the university’s vice president, explained:
Shutting down the network was a necessary but painful decision to protect sensitive systems and data.
The attack has rendered critical platforms like Canvas, Teams, Wi-Fi, and email inaccessible, disrupting operations across the university. The shutdown, a precautionary move, is expected to last until at least January 14, with hopes of a full restoration in the following days.
Although initial investigations indicate no signs of data theft, concerns linger due to TU/e’s proximity to ASML Holding NV, a global chip-making giant. Cybersecurity experts fear potential risks to the university’s high-value collaborations.
