Dublin, November 29, 2024 – Cyber watchdogs expose retailers’ fake Black Friday discounts, uncovering deceptive pricing scams. Legal action is underway as trust in sales plummets.

Cyber agents have blown the lid off a widespread fraud operation, exposing fake Black Friday discounts that duped thousands of shoppers into thinking they scored deals.

The sting, led by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), revealed that major retailers in electronics, cosmetics, furniture, and clothing sectors were flaunting deceptive discounts to lure customers.

Over the 2023-2024 winter sales season, watchdogs conducted meticulous sweeps of online and in-store pricing. Their findings were chilling: manipulated prices showcased as slashed deals,” leaving bargain-hunters paying more than they bargained for.

Shoppers’ trust is dwindling, with recent surveys showing that fewer than one in three believe in the authenticity of discounts. The CCPC is calling on consumers to report dubious deals to protect others from falling victim.

The first wave of legal proceedings will hit courts in January 2025, targeting high-profile violators. More cases are expected to follow as cyber sleuths continue their crackdown.

On-the-ground inspections during this year’s Black Friday sales aim to deter similar fraudulent practices. However, consumer watchdogs warn that vigilance is essential.
