North Korean hackers have unleashed a torrent of cyberattacks this year, stealing a staggering $1.3 billion in cryptocurrency across 47 incidents. According to blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis, this marks a jaw-dropping 102% increase in stolen funds compared to 2023. The stolen assets, used to bolster the regime’s weapons development program, expose a chilling escalation in cybercrime.
The hacks targeted decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms and centralized services, with major breaches including the $305 million DMM Bitcoin heist in May and a $235 million theft from WazirX in July. Security experts are alarmed by the hackers’ sophistication.
Cybersecurity analyst James Ko remarked:
This scale of theft is unprecedented. It underscores the urgent need for robust global countermeasures.
Chainalysis identified private key compromises as the leading cause, responsible for 44% of the losses. Exploitation of platform vulnerabilities accounted for 6.3%, highlighting significant gaps in security practices.
North Korea’s Lazarus Group, infamous for its advanced techniques, has been linked to these attacks. Miriam Chang, a digital forensics expert noted:

Despite the crackdown on cybercrime, 2024 recorded 303 cryptocurrency theft incidents. While it didn’t surpass the $3.7 billion stolen in 2022, the sharp rise in frequency indicates a troubling trend for 2025.
