Washington, D.C. | February 17, 2025 –A data breach at the U.S. Coast Guard exposed financial details and delayed pay for 1,135 members. CGIS and Cyber Command are investigating, while the Coast Guard promises swift payment resolutions.
A cybersecurity breach has struck the U.S. Coast Guard, disrupting payroll systems and delaying payments for 1,135 service members. The breach, discovered after reports of unusual account activity, exposed members’ direct deposit and routing information, raising serious concerns over financial security.
The Coast Guard immediately took its Pay and Personnel Center’s Direct Access service offline, citing “unscheduled maintenance” while the breach is investigated. Impacted members were notified via email, and the Coast Guard promised expedited payments to those affected.
The men and women of the Coast Guard are our most valuable resource. They will be paid as soon as possible, and we are committed to full transparency during this investigation.
This incident follows a previous data breach in April 2024, which compromised personal details of over 10,000 Coast Guard Reserve members, highlighting ongoing cybersecurity vulnerabilities within military payroll systems.
The investigation is being led by the Coast Guard Investigative Service (CGIS) and Coast Guard Cyber Command, who are working to identify the breach’s source and prevent further attacks. Marisa Kabas, the journalist who first reported the incident said:
This breach highlights the urgent need for stronger cybersecurity protocols.
As the investigation continues, cybersecurity experts urge service members to monitor their bank statements, change passwords, and enable two-factor authentication to prevent further compromise.
