Manila, December 26, 2024 –Christmas cybercrime soars in the Philippines, with victims losing millions to phishing and fake e-commerce scams. Experts urge vigilance this holiday season.
As Filipinos filled their virtual carts for Christmas shopping, cybercriminals unwrapped their own schemes, preying on unsuspecting online shoppers. A shocking 40% surge in holiday-related cybercrimes has been reported globally, with the Philippines experiencing a significant rise in phishing scams and fake e-commerce websites.
One victim, Margaret Esguerra, fell prey to a phishing scam through a fraudulent SMS that appeared to come from GCash, the nation’s largest e-wallet provider. Within minutes of clicking the link, she lost ₱53,000. Esguerra said:
It was my hard-earned money. I trusted the source because it came from an official account. Losing it during Christmas is heartbreaking.
Experts warn of sophisticated methods like IMSI attacks, where scammers downgrade mobile connections to trick users into connecting to fake base stations. Once connected, attackers can intercept personal and financial information. Art Samaniego from Scam Watch Pilipinas called it:
A high-tech ambush that exploits people’s trust and desperation during the holidays.
A recent TransUnion study revealed that the Philippines’ fraud rate, at 13.6%, far exceeds the global average of 4.6%, making the country a hotbed for cybercrimes.
GCash has reassured users of continuous investments in security technologies but urged vigilance. Meta’s global anti-scam campaign has also been launched to educate users on identifying fraudulent schemes.
