San Francisco, January 28, 2025 – Bitwarden introduces mandatory email verification for suspicious logins, boosting security for non-MFA users. Update rolling out in February.

Open-source password manager Bitwarden is stepping up its security game by introducing mandatory email verification for suspicious login attempts, making it harder for hackers to access password vaults without multi-factor authentication (MFA).

Starting in February, users who haven’t enabled two-factor authentication (2FA) will face an added layer of protection. When a login is attempted from an unrecognized device or after clearing browser cookies, Bitwarden will send a verification code via email. Without entering this code, access to the vault is denied. Bitwarden announced:

Cybersecurity analyst Fiona Blake praised the update:

However, Bitwarden warns users who store email credentials within their password vaults to ensure they have independent access to their email accounts. Failure to do so could result in being locked out entirely.

Security expert James Carter added:

This feature excludes self-hosted instances and does not replace the need for a robust master password. Users are urged to choose long, unique passwords to further safeguard their accounts.

Bitwarden’s initiative demonstrates its commitment to raising cybersecurity standards, ensuring even non-MFA users enjoy enhanced protection.
