Cupertino, February 20, 2025 –Apple’s iPhone 16e ditches its budget-friendly roots, launching at $600 with AI features. Is this an upgrade or a pricey strategy shift?
Apple has unveiled the iPhone 16e, a so-called budget-friendly iPhone that now comes with a steep price hike and AI-powered features. The new model, replacing the iPhone SE, will cost $600—a staggering 40% increase from its predecessor’s $430 price tag.
The iPhone 16e features a larger 6.1-inch display, no home button, and Face ID unlock, making it look more like Apple’s premium models. Most notably, it’s powered by Apple’s AI system, “Apple Intelligence”, which includes real-time text summarization, voice assistant upgrades, and personalized emojis.
Tech analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee said:
Apple is walking a fine line between affordability and profit maximization. This isn’t a budget phone anymore, it’s a premium iPhone in disguise.
Despite the AI hype, Apple is struggling with delays in rolling out its AI-powered features globally. The iPhone 16e’s AI tools are still unavailable in China, one of Apple’s biggest markets, though a recent deal with Alibaba hints at a potential rollout later this year.
Critics argue that Apple is phasing out truly affordable iPhones in favor of higher-margin AI-powered devices. With the cheapest iPhone now starting at $600, is Apple abandoning budget-conscious users?
AI is the future, but should consumers be forced to pay a premium for it?
