Washington, D.C., January 2, 2025-U.S. sanctions target Iranian and Russian entities for using AI-driven deepfakes to meddle in the 2024 election, exposing alarming trends in cyber warfare.
The U.S. Treasury Department has sanctioned Iranian and Russian entities for leveraging AI-driven deepfakes and cyber tactics to meddle in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The sanctioned groups orchestrated sophisticated disinformation campaigns, stoking social and political tensions and targeting the electoral process.
The Iranian Cognitive Design Production Center (CDPC), a subsidiary of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), conducted operations to incite division among U.S. voters. Similarly, Russia’s Center for Geopolitical Expertise (CGE) used AI tools to produce and distribute deepfakes via a network of 100 websites masquerading as legitimate news outlets.
These operations weaponize technology to undermine democracy.
A Treasury spokesperson warned, adding that such tactics pose a global threat to national security. The GRU-backed CGE received funding to maintain AI servers capable of generating synthetic content at scale.
Their ability to create and distribute fabricated news is a dangerous evolution in cyber warfare.
The sanctions come as the latest push to curb election interference, with U.S. authorities unmasking the tactics behind the influence campaigns. Cybersecurity officials highlighted the urgent need for public awareness, stating:
We are battling a new wave of digital deception.
This revelation underscores the growing threat posed by generative AI in the geopolitical landscape, where technology is increasingly weaponized for misinformation and sabotage.
