New York, November 12, 2024 —Bluesky sees a surge of 700K users leaving X post-election, seeking refuge from misinformation and far-right rhetoric as frustrations with X intensify.
Following the recent U.S. election, social media platform Bluesky has welcomed over 700,000 new users in a mass exodus from X, formerly known as Twitter.
The influx, largely driven by frustration over misinformation, far-right activism, and perceived bias under the leadership of Elon Musk and his association with U.S. president-elect Donald Trump, has swelled Bluesky’s user base to 14.5 million.
This shift highlights a growing divide as social media users seek platforms that align with their values and offer a more moderated environment.
It’s become a refuge for people who want a safer social media experience without the far-right rhetoric, bots, and misinformation that now dominate X
Bluesky, initially a project within Twitter, has gained traction as an alternative to X, with features like direct messaging and video compatibility that echo the familiar Twitter experience while focusing on stricter moderation.
New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who rejoined Bluesky recently, celebrated the platform’s vibrant user base, stating:
Good GOD it’s nice to be in a digital space with other real human beings.
Her post garnered over 27,000 likes, reflecting the platform’s appeal to diverse voices. Despite facing growing pains as new users acclimate, Bluesky’s community continues to expand, suggesting a promising alternative for users disillusioned with X’s current direction.
