San Francisco, November 29, 202423andMe suffers massive data breach, exposing millions of DNA profiles. Outrage grows as risks of identity theft and misuse escalate worldwide.

The world of personal genetics is reeling as DNA testing giant 23andMe faces backlash over a massive data breach that exposed the sensitive information of millions.

Hackers reportedly targeted profiles in its DNA Relatives feature, compromising 5.5 million accounts and accessing data from an additional 1.4 million customers.

The breach, which went undetected for months, has raised alarm worldwide about the security of genetic data.

The hackers allegedly sold the stolen information on the dark web, raising concerns over potential misuse of personal data. Jake Moore, cybersecurity expert at ESET, warned:

The breach particularly impacted individuals of Chinese and Ashkenazi Jewish descent, whose data was reportedly targeted and posted online. Customers are questioning the company’s transparency, as critics accuse 23andMe of prioritizing growth over user safety.

23andMe’s CEO Anne Wojcicki acknowledged the company’s struggles, including a lawsuit settled for $30 million in September. Once valued at $6 billion, the company has seen its worth plummet to under $150 million.

The incident has reignited debate on the ethics of storing and sharing genetic data, with some demanding stricter regulations for companies handling such sensitive information.
