Providence, November 14, 2024Massive healthcare data breach leaks 100 million health records, with stolen data now fetching high prices on the dark web.

In a data breach unprecedented in scope, healthcare technology company Change Healthcare has disclosed that sensitive health records of over 100 million Americans have been leaked and are now a “goldmine” on the dark web.

This breach, the largest of its kind, has exposed millions to the risks of identity theft and medical fraud, where scammers are reportedly selling this health data at premium prices, far exceeding the usual value of stolen financial information.

Weisman explains that the consequences of such a breach are dire, with thieves able to misuse victims’ identities to obtain medical treatments, impacting the accuracy of medical records and even putting lives at risk.

Beyond the risk of fraudulent claims, this breach also introduces a critical issue under HIPAA privacy laws, which ironically make it difficult for victims to remove inaccurate information resulting from identity theft.

As Change Healthcare begins notifying those affected, security experts are urging consumers to monitor their Explanation of Benefits (EOB) statements for any suspicious claims or unknown providers. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the growing vulnerabilities within healthcare data systems as hackers increasingly target these lucrative data pools.
