Net Neutrality Supporters Occupy Google at Googleplex CA

Occupy Google is taking place at Google’s Head Quarter in Mountain View, California right now.

Why Google? Because Google was the first to execute the idea of preferrential treatment in traffic transmission. Google was the first to set up its servers inside the Internet Service Providers. The idea was that this would allow data traffic to move more swiftly from Google’s data centers to internet users on the web.

Needless to say, Google was looking to maximize data delivery speed by establishing as close a connection as possible to users. This is called a Content Delivery Network (CDN), and while CDNs were in regular shared use in the past, this was the first time that that a PRIVATE CDN had been setup.

Bigshots like Netflix have also created their own private CDNs and Apple is working on creating what many believe will be the mother of private CDNs.

Protestors are insisting that Google needs to accept its responsibility as the king of the internet. Occupy Google is like a daughter branch of the Occupy movement and even though there isn’t a very large crowd protesting outside Google right now, the official Occupy Google website promises a major online protest on July 10th.

It is unclear how the online protest will roll out but volunteers are being invited to create/share media, build code and craft art/info-graphics for the online protest.

Watch this clip of John Oliver calling out Net Neutrality for what it is in a not-so-polite way.

Oliver is the host of HBO’s ‘Last Week Tonight’, and the take he took on Net Neutrality recently made some serious waves. According to Oliver:

“If we let cable companies offer two speeds of service, they won’t be Usain Bolt and Usain Bolt on a motor bike. They’ll be Usain Bolt and Usain Bolted to an anchor. What’s being proposed is so egregious, activists and corporations have been forced onto the same side”

Oliver showed a clip of a congressional hearing on the Net Neutrality and insisted that the public had no idea how serious the issue really was because it bored them – and that they would start screaming when they will notice the bills go up.

“And that’s the problem. The cable companies have figured out the great truth of America: if you want to do something evil, put it inside something boring. Advocates should not be talking about protecting net neutrality. They shouldn’t even use that phrase. They should call it preventing cable company fuckery. Because that is what it is”.

The shit has hit the fan as news reports confirm that the police have arrived but deny that any arrests have made, while the official Occupy Google twitter account (@occupygoogl) clalims that around 10 people have been arressted at the protest that is essentially peaceful.
