June 16 Knock-Out Matches: Portugal, Nigeria & USA will win

Looking forward to the upcoming FIFA matches? June 16 is drawing closer and three highly anticipated matches are lined up.

  • Germany vs. Portugal from Group G, at 12:00 PM (EST)
  • Iran vs. Nigeria from Group F, 03:00 PM (EST)
  • Ghana vs. United States from Group G, 06:00 PM (EST)

Germany vs. Portugal

Location:

The match will take place in the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvado.

Current Rankings:

Both teams are in the top 5 with Germany on position 2 tailing Spain with 1300 points and Portugal on position 4 with 1189 points, barely managing to keep Argentina off its heals.

Previous Confrontations:

The two teams have faced off 17 times in the past with 5 of them ending in Draws, and Germany taking the prize home 9 times out of the remaining 12; leaving Portugal with only 3 wins.

Teams’ Fitness Comparison:

People in Portugal are praying that Cristiano Ronaldo’s tendonitis and thigh issues don’t ruin everything. If the world’s 29 year old favorite Forward footballer doesn’t manage to give a hundred percent in the game tonight, German players will know and they will not hesitate to squash the opposition.

Germany’s team is going through a particularly bad time because some of its best players won’t be playing. The absentee list includes 25 year old attacking midfielder Marco Reus, 23 year old midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, 25 year old centre backer Holger Badstuber, and 29 year old midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Nevertheless, the German team sliced through their opposition in the qualifying rounds by winning 9 out of 10 matches. Germany is blessed with some veteran players that are expected to help keep the line strong but all eyes will be on 30 year old defensive midfielder Philipp Lahm who is considered to be the only one who can neutralize attacks by Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

Iran vs. Nigeria

Location:

This will be the second match to take place in Group F and will take place at the Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Parana. The stadium has a capacity of seating over twenty five thousand football fans.

Current Rankings:

Neither of the two teams managed to make a spot in the Top 20 ranking list for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Iran is currently number 43 while Nigeria is number 44.

Previous Confrontations:

Nigeria won in the only FIFA face off that the two teams had in the past.

Teams’ Fitness Comparison:

This time, Nigeria is looking to cash off 23 year old Victor Moses, and 27 year old John Obi Mikel. The two Midfielders are in excellent fitness and are expected to lead Nigeria to victory in this match.

None of the two teams are aggressive, which has led some fans to believe that this might be one of the most laid back matches of this season. However, while there are speculations that the match might end in a draw, players like the 26 year old Iranian Forward, Reza Ghoochannejhad, might just tip the scales when least expected.

Carlos Queiroz worked at Manchester United for five years and also worked for 10 months at Real Madrid before signing on as the Iranian team’s manager. His presence continues to inspire the Iranian team and is the reason why people look at every next match expecting the Iranian team to give a stellar performance.

Ghana vs. United States

Location:

The Group G match will take place in the Arena das Dunas (also known as the Estádio das Dunas). The stadium has a capacity to sear over forty five thousand people, and is expected to be jam packed for the match between Ghana and the USA.

Current Rankings:

The US team has managed to reach the 13th position in the FIFA top ranking 20 while the team from Ghana is sitting at number 37.

Previous Confrontations:

Ghana beat the USA in the 2006 FIFA World Cup and then again when the two teams competed in the 2010 World Cup.

Teams’ Fitness Comparison:

Ghana is a considered to be one of the most aggressive teams from the African, but the recent ranking released by FIFA shows that the US team has experienced a near-revolutionary level of improvement in the recent past.

This has led many to believe that the match might be in the bag for the US team leaving Ghana as nothing more than a stepping stone towards what might possibly be a road to the semi-finals if not the finals.

The last time the USA team performed in the FIFA World Cup was in 1930 when the team made it all the way to the semi-finals. This time the team has everything to lose and seems to be in a much better shape with a strong desire to settle the score with Ghana.
