Le VPN was initially based in France but then shifted to Hong Kong to avoid falling under 9 eyes country jurisdiction.

In this Le VPN review in Japan blog, we have evaluated Le VPNs speeds, streaming capabilities, server network, device compatibility, and customer service.

Is Le VPN safe to use? Yes, all of its security features are spot on like they use AES-256 cipher, kill switch, WireGuard, and all-important tunneling protocols like OpenVPN, PPTP, & L2TP. Although, its price is a bit expensive and Le VPN keeps some user logs, which raises our privacy concerns.

Moreover, despite having servers in the most common 100 countries and delivering outstanding speed performance, it was unable to unblock the majority of streaming services except Netflix. Surprisingly, we were able to access US Netflix with the Le VPN US server.

Le VPN is quite expensive when it comes to its pricing plan. It offers 3 different plans in Japan. These are listed below:

All of its pricing packages offer access to all servers, HybridVPN, 5 simultaneous connections, and customer support in Japan.

Le VPN specifies in its Terms of Use that it holds the right to change the pricing at any time, but it won’t affect users who are already under a subscription until it expires.

ExpressVPN or Surfshark offers more or less similar features but at a better and more affordable price than you need to check out now.

However, we found their refund policy a bit vague. Despite the fact the VPN provider has a 30-day money-back guarantee, you can only get your full refund if you cancel within 7 days.

So it is basically a 7-day money-back guarantee which is a shorter time to explore its features. Since there is no Le VPN free trial, learn more about how Le VPN compares with other providers in our low-cost VPNs in Japan article.

– Servers and Locations

Le VPN offers 700 servers in 100+ locations covering the most important countries. The following places are where you may locate Le VPN’s servers:

Servers Servers locations
Asia and Oceania 20
Africa and the Middle East 6
Central America 6
Europe 40
North America 12
South America 7

Despite the fact that Le VPN only has a few servers in each particular region, the number of nations it serves is impressive. It even boasts an excellent network of servers in regions like Central America and the Middle East that are frequently ignored by VPN companies.

Also, each continent has a significant selection of P2P-optimized servers. All of Le VPN’s servers that are accessible support the Wireguard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, IPSec, and L2TP protocols.

Le VPN in Japan– Privacy and Security

In this Le VPN in Japan review, we found out that it uses DH-2048 for the TLS handshake, SHA256 authentication, and AES-256-CBC cryptography. It also includes PFS and DHE. This security level is so high that it would be nearly difficult to hack it. Given the length of the encryption keys, it is resistant to brute force attacks.

Do you want to know ‘is Le VPN a good VPN for security in Japan?’ Well, it offers several main protocols like WireGuard, OpenVPN, L2TP, and IKEv2 with IPSec. The industry standard, OpenVPN is quick and safe. Since L2TP is a little less secure, it combines with IPSec to provide encryption.

The fact that WireGuard is supported by all Le VPN servers is encouraging because it’s swiftly gaining recognition as the quickest protocol.

Additional Security Features

Besides the traditional features, Le VPN offers a few more additional features that boost your online security. Here are a few of its security features that you should know:

Smart DNS

Le VPN offers a Smart DNS service as well with DNS servers from 9 different countries. Smart DNS can come in handy if you want to unblock streaming services like Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and channels such as ABC, CBC, and France2. With Le VPN smart DNS we also unblocked TF1 in Japan.

Smart DNS is not as a security feature as a VPN. Its main utility lies in its speed. If you need fast streaming, turn on the Smart DNS.

Hybrid VPN

HybridVPN is a unique feature of Le VPN, basically a combination of VPN and Smart DNS technologies. You can easily bypass restrictions on US, UK, and French channels and stream your favorite content.

Jurisdiction – Where is Le VPN Based?

Le VPN is based in Hong Kong, a safe country since it doesn’t fall under 5 eyes, 9 eyes, or 14 eyes country.

If it were in the 14 eyes country, it would have shared users’ data with authorities. This law does not bind companies within Hong Kong, so your personal information with Le VPN remains safe.

Even though law enforcement did ask for your information, that leads you to be a suspect; Le VPN still won’t reveal your information but will suspend your account. You can read about this more in the Privacy Policy section below.

Does Le VPN keep logs?

Well, yes and no. Basically, Le VPN keeps connection logs but does not keep usage logs. Le VPN’s privacy and policy are found under ‘Terms of Use” that clearly states that they store the following information:

  • Username
  • Email address
  • Password (encrypted)
  • Original IP address (critical)

But they also reflect in their policy statement that:

You may also correct, update, or delete your personal information by making the change on your account page.

So, there’s an improvement. Overall, its logging policy seems good enough. Collecting your original IP address seems critical; if they can improve, that would be great.

Reading this piece of information had my trust in this VPN service:

If law enforcement pays a visit to Le VPN headquarters and asks for your information, they may suspend your account for suspicious activities. However, still, they would not reveal your information. That’s something to applaud.

Speed – How Fast is Le VPN in Japan?

Le VPN server speed is good enough for fast streaming in Japan. We carefully analyze its speed by connecting to its multiple servers. The percentage drop-off was then determined based on the average upload and download speeds and compared to our baseline speeds.

Before doing the Le VPN speed test, we checked our base internet speed and it was 30 Mbps. But as we connected to Le VPN’s US server, my speed slightly dropped to 22.96 Mbps. Here is the snapshot of the speed test:

We recorded a decline in speed by only 24% on Le VPN’s US Server.

I also tested Le VPN on the UK server. Here are the results:

The speed declined by 36%, which is also fairly reasonable.

We also tested Le VPN on the Australia server. Here are the results:

The speed declined by 42%, and we experienced buffering as well.

Considering these results in Japan, we figured out that Le VPN boasts strong performance through its European servers, however, its faraway servers are terribly slow. If high speeds and no buffering is your priority, have a look at our recommended fastest VPN providers in Japan.

Le VPN in Japan– Streaming

Le VPN was only able to unblock Netflix on a US server. It was easier to unblock Netflix than we would have thought. At the same time, reviewing different Netflix VPNs, we usually have to connect multiple US servers before we actually get Le VPN Netflix to work.

We had a good time watching Netflix with Le VPN.

However, after successfully using their US server to access Netflix, we were disappointed to know that Le VPN has trouble unblocking the majority of other websites.

We personally tried to access the different sites with Le VPN. Unfortunately, Le VPN was unable to unblock Hulu, HBO Max, and BBC iPlayer on our Windows and iOS devices.

Is Le VPN Good for Torrenting in Japan

Yes, Le VPN is good for torrenting in Japan. Le VPN offers P2P servers that will help you download torrents. It offers P2P and file-sharing in 5 different countries, i.e., Canada, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Poland. You can download and upload an unlimited number of files because the bandwidth is unrestricted.

However, even though many of Le VPN’s servers on every continent are set up for P2P file sharing, the service only advises torrenting in nations where it is legal to do so.

Despite all of this, the VPN service’s location and logging rules make me hesitant to torrent with it. If you wish to torrent securely use the best VPN for torrenting in Japan.

Compatibility – Apps and Supported Devices

Le VPN is compatible with all major platforms and devices. You can download Le VPN native app/client for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android devices.

Le VPN for Windows

Installing the Le VPN Windows app was quite a difficult process. We had a hard time setting up its Windows app on the laptop.

So eventually, we had to uninstall the app because it was incredibly problematic, slowed down my entire system, and caused other problems.

Along with annoying VPN-related bugs, installing the app had a significant negative influence on our PC’s performance. We had to restart the PC multiple times. However, thanks to Le VPN’s (effective) kill switch, every time we attempted to continue with Le VPN security review tests, we encountered severe slowdowns, frozen screens, and internet disconnection.

However, Le VPN ran flawlessly and without any problems for us when we tested it on iOS and Mac. The app was incredibly easy to use and promptly installed on Mac and iOS devices. We were able to quickly connect and switch between countries’ servers without experiencing any annoying delays.

Le VPN for macOS

The Le VPN Mac app is similar to its Windows app. You can choose locations on the top-right corner of the app or directly choose from the front.

The Le VPN app is simple to use when it’s working. You can opt to switch between IKEv2 and IPSec by going to the settings menu on your device. The “More Protocols” link will take you to a page where you can choose between Wireguard, OpenVPN, and L2TP with IPSec. We quickly manually configured Wireguard because of the simple and clear setup instructions.

Le VPN for iOS

Le VPN for iOS didn’t require any waiting. Its iOS is much smoother than the Android app. It also loads very fast on my iPad, and it takes almost a few seconds to connect to any server location.

Its server list is alphabetized, so all you have to do is scroll through until you locate your desired location.

The method of hopping between servers was also interesting. You can immediately go to another location and connect in Japan because the server abruptly disconnected.

Does Le VPN work in China?

Yes, Le VPN works in China. They also have obfuscated servers in Japan that tend to unblock websites present in China, Russia, and UAE, where there are tough internet restrictions.

After this comparative analysis, we came to the conclusion that ExpressVPN is a far better option than Le VPN in terms of security, privacy and streaming. The service provider has an extensive server network and operates from privacy-friendly jurisdiction with a strict no-logs policy. On the other hand, Le VPN operates from Hong Kong but still logs the connection activities of its users. So for us, ExpressVPN leads the race for the safest VPN in the industry.

Alternatives to Le VPN in Japan

Le VPN faces strong competition from other providers in Japan. Here are a few alternatives that are capable enough to give Le VPN a run for its money.

FAQ – Le VPN Reviews in Japan

Yes, Le VPN is safe to use in Japan because it uses a good AES-256 cipher, one of the strongest cryptographic standards available today. However, Le VPN does not provide a wide range of VPN protocols. It is limited to 5 protocols, i.e., OpenVPN, PPTP, IKEv2, IPSec, L2TP, and HybridVPN

Yes, Le VPN does slightly reduce your speeds in Japan. In our speed testing, it performed below average. With a minimum of 24% decrease in speed in some areas, we got average results, especially when testing faraway servers.

Yes, Le VPN can unblock Netflix. We connected to its US servers and easily access the US Netflix library with a little buffering issue. However, according to the provider, you might not be able to access all libraries on all servers. Since your account will be tied to the location of purchase, you will still be able to access Netflix in your home country from anywhere.

Moreover, unfortunately, we could not able to unblock other streaming services using its other VPN servers.

Le VPN has several drawbacks, but after this Le VPN review in Japan, we can say that it has the potential to be an excellent VPN service. In our streaming tests, it failed to unblock the majority of streaming services. This was unfortunate because its speeds and trustworthy servers in so many places ought to be great for streaming.

It offers some strong VPN protocols and encryption. However, being a team that is supposed to be so committed to privacy and security, the thing which disappoints us the most is their vague logging policy and its place of origin, Hong Kong.

Moreover, It comes at a high price, the longer-term plans offer decent value but the monthly subscription is incredibly pricey for what you get.
