Italy’s Data Protection Authority (DPA) has criticized banking giant Intesa Sanpaolo for its failure to accurately communicate the scale and impact of a recent data breach, affecting around 3,500 clients.
The watchdog flagged Intesa for downplaying” the incident, emphasizing potential risks to affected clients’ privacy and reputation, with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reportedly among those compromised.
The breach involved an Intesa employee who accessed sensitive client data. While the bank initially suggested a more extensive breach, it later reduced the estimated number of affected clients. However, the DPA reprimanded Intesa for insufficient transparency.

In response to the watchdog’s demands, Intesa has been instructed to notify all impacted clients within 20 days. The bank dismissed the employee involved and has committed to stricter internal controls.
