ISIS Active on Social Media
ISIS has been quite aggressive lately especially when it comes to spreading the word. The group has been working rigorously to make an impression and thus using modern media to convey their message.
ISIS came into existence on April 2013. ISIS is an extremist group, allegedly working with Al-Qaeda in Iraq. Recently, different social media platforms especially the ones with higher user count were abused by ISIS – spreading the word about their ill intentions.
Campaign of Terror
It seems like ISIS has its own way of retaliation. In response to the global War on Terror, ISIS has its own Campaign of Terror. To culminate ISIS’ vigorous activities on social media, Iraqi government has decided to block different social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and G+. In addition, engaging Smartphone apps such as Whatsapp might also be blocked in Iraq.
Social Media Blackout in Iraq
It seems like Iraq will soon face social media blackout. However, if ISIS’ activities continue to steps forward, the country might just encounter complete social media blackout. Currently, Iraqi government has shut down Internet in 5 of 19 provinces. The geographic locations for the Internet halt have been selected as per ISIS’ active involvement over social media channels accessed in particular localities.
Iraqi government has temporarily lifted the bans on social media platforms and instructed the ISPs to remove all social media access obstructs. Nevertheless, it has been reported that the social media channels are still inaccessible in some areas.
