TorGuard vs. BTGuard

TorGuard vs BTGuard: Pricing Plans

VPN Packages

The difference in pricing for the one-month plan is not considerable between the two providers. TorGuard vs BTGuard: Server Spread

TorGuard offers numerous servers in different regions and beats BTGuard by a country mile in terms of server spread. You get to choose from 3000+ servers of TorGuard located across 55 countries. On the other hand, BTGuard only offers three servers located in Toronto (Canada), Amsterdam (Netherlands), and Singapore.

Therefore, TorGuard vs. BTGuard is a one-legged race in terms of server options. With TorGuard, you can connect to multiple regions and keep on switching your IP address while using BitTorrent. It also allows you to bypass internet censorship and geo-restrictions on various websites, including torrent sites.

TorGuard vs BTGuard: Privacy & Security Features

Now for the important part of our TorGuard vs. BTGuard comparison. The privacy and security features are offered by both providers. Why is this important? Since both services are favorites for safely using torrents, it is critical to see how they defend your identity and data from copyright trolls, ISPs, and other cyber-goons.

However, do remember that with a proxy, you are only hiding your identity from a single connection, mainly the torrent client. Whereas, a VPN protects your entire internet network.

TorGuard vs BTGuard: Protocols & Encryption

TorGuard offers different protocols for security. These include OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP/IPsec, SSTP, and iKEv2. In addition, you get to select AES 128-bit or AES 256-bit encryption algorithms. With multiple protocols to choose from and military-grade encryption, TorGuard allows you to connect to BitTorrent swarms with an anonymous IP address and hide the contents of your internet traffic.

BTGuard secures your network and preserves your privacy through OpenVPN and PPTP protocol. PPTP provides fast speeds but is a weak defensive measure, as the protocol is known to be compromised. OpenVPN is the strongest protocol available today and combined with AES 256-bit encryption, it forms a formidable defense against different cyber threats.

TorGuard vs BTGuard: Compatibility

Both services have cross-platform compatibility. You can use BTGuard and TorGuard on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS devices. Similarly, the proxy services can be manually configured on different torrent clients, including Vuze and uTorrent. Therefore, it is hard to pick a winner from TorGuard vs. BTGuard with respect to compatibility. However, in terms of software, TorGuard takes the lead.

TorGuard

TorGuard offers exclusive apps for different platforms. You can download the VPN client or configure the service manually. We tested the software on Windows and found it pretty neat. It is well-designed and easy to use. Just download the software, select the protocol and encryption key you want to use, and connect to the desired server.

BTGuard

On the other hand, BTGuard does not offer exclusive apps or VPN clients. You will have to configure either PPTP or OpenVPN protocol manually on your preferred device. However, for OpenVPN, you will have to download the OpenVPN program and BTGuard’s OpenVPN executable files.

Performance

The big question about TorGuard vs. BTGuard is their respective performance while using torrents. We tested the TorGuard VPN service and the download speeds were average on the uTorrent client. On our 100 Mbps network connection, we achieved 63.2 Mbps download speeds and 96.2 Mbps upload speeds. We connected to a server located in Hong Kong with TorGuard using the OpenVPN protocol.

The performance of BTGuard was slightly better than TorGuard’s. On the same network, we observed 75.9 Mbps download speeds on uTorrent. Since there are only three server choices from BTGuard, we connected to the Singapore server to conduct the tests.

However, the proxy service of both providers offered fast results. The download speeds did not drop off and the results were in the high nineties. One of the reasons for this is that proxy does not encrypt your entire internet connection, instead only your BitTorrent client.

Additional Features

In terms of additional features, TorGuard comes out on top against BTGuard. There are different additional features offered by TorGuard. In addition to a VPN and proxy, you get anonymous email and VPN routers. With anonymous email, TorGuard protects your emails by using two-factor authentication, G//PGP encryption, perfect forward secrecy, and storing your emails on offshore storage facilities.

Sadly, such additional features are not available with BTGuard. You can choose from a VPN service or a proxy. However, you can run the proxy within a VPN connection for stronger protection of your identity and data from inspection.

Final Verdict: TorGuard vs BTGuard

So, in TorGuard vs BTGuard, which provider comes out on top? We would have to go with TorGuard. This is because the VPN provider offers more features, a large pool of servers to connect to, and a price advantage over BTGuard.

That said, the proxy service of both services is almost similar in terms of performance and prices for the one-month plan. Proxy is good for hiding your identity from copyright sharks spying on BitTorrent swarms. However, it will not secure your entire internet connection.

Therefore, if you are looking for privacy and security from a holistic point of view, a VPN is your best bet. It encrypts and tunnels your entire internet connection, protecting you while you browse the internet or download torrents.
