Reading Time: 4 minutes

It has been more than a month for an eventuality that I (and I’m sure many others) feared for all along: Flixtor has gone offline. The website was arguably the best place to watch all categories of TV shows at high quality for free.

Although there are similar free streaming sites on the web, Flixtor was one of a kind because of the complete lack of ads and annoying pop-ups. Man, I’m surely gonna miss it.

But all good things come to an end and that is how the world goes.

So, until Flixtor is back online, there have to be some alternatives for US TV/movie streaming fanatics to cater to our binge-urges.

Ready to find out these alternatives? Let’s go!

Wait a minute, what really happened to Flixtor?

Flixtor has been a little vague about what really happened. Some users think that pressure from the movie industry and legal issues led the website to shut down. However, this seems unlikely because the good news is that the Flixtor crew is already working on new video software and hardware to rebuild their library and come back online.

The crew released a statement where they stated the website should be back about two weeks from 13th December 2018. So, all hope is not lost! We can yet keep our fingers crossed for the return of our favorite free streaming website.

An important point to notice in this statement is that there are a lot of fake websites claiming to be Flixtor. Stay away from these sites as these can be potentially dangerous.

Top Alternatives for Flixtor in 2022

The websites that I’m going to discuss below are all safe and reliable services that work even better if you have a good streaming VPN working in the background. Check out the reliable VPNs tested and listed by VPNRanks in 2022.

1. LookMovie

LookMovie offers free movie streams with no ads whatsoever. It has all the latest movies that become available soon after they are released. However, high quality versions (720p and 1080p) take longer to become available, and the quality varies for each title.

LookMovie

There are 1000s of movies from old classics to recent blockbusters available on LookMovie. You can select subtitles from different languages as well, or turn all captions off if you so desire.

Unfortunately, LookMovie only offers movies, no TV shows.

2. Popcorn Time

Popcorn-time

Popcorn Time is a free streaming app featuring thousands of movies as well as TV shows. The app is compatible with Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux. Users can choose the video quality and subtitle options while streaming as well. The huge video catalog is good enough to serve as an alternative to Flixtor.

I would also recommend you to use a VPN with popcorn time to ensure your online privacy and stay secure online.

3. MoviesJoy

MoviesJoy

MoviesJoy is a web-based streaming site that hosts a large number of movies and TV shows in video qualities ranging from “CAM” to 1080p. The movies tagged with the CAM label are those recorded with a camcorder, and thus of a low quality. One problem with this site is that the movies which have subtitles on by default can’t be turned off, unfortunately, which can be a little irritating.

4. SubsMovies

SubsMovies

SubsMovies is a well-designed video streaming website that has both TV shows and movies in its large content library. However, the website has a lot of ads and pop-ups which can be annoying. If you can overlook that, SubsMovies is a decent place to get free shows and movies.

5. Watch Series

WatchSeries

Watch Series is a TV show streaming website. The amount of shows available in the Watch Series is immense, to say the least. But the catch is…. yeah, you guessed it: the website has a lot of ads for you to deal with. Unlike other sites mentioned above, Watch Series redirects you to a third-party website, because it does not host any shows itself. That is another drawback of this service, but we can bear with that until Flixtor returns to the scene.

Why it is a Good Idea to Use a VPN for Streaming Sites

A VPN service can make your experience of streaming shows and movies smoother for a couple of reasons:

Avoid Copyright Violations

The movie industry doesn’t like all these free streaming services. Legally, they have a right to be angered, because hosting movies without the permission of producers is a copyright violation. This puts both the websites and their users at risk of facing legal consequences.

A VPN like ExpressVPN can protect you from these legal risks by keeping your connection completely private and encrypting your traffic, making you almost totally unidentifiable on the web. With a perfect privacy policy that safeguards the users, I strongly recommend this VPN to rule out the possibility of running into legal problems for using sites like Flixtor and its alternatives.

When you are in-country like the United States, where copyright violations are punishable by hefty fines or jail time, you should take it very seriously and start using a VPN in order to avoid copyright violations. Our friends who are in the US can also enjoy their favorite movies online and download torrents with these top VPN for US.

Block Ads and Malicious Pop-ups

This is a common problem inherent in many free streaming websites: they are riddled with pesky ads and pop-ups. Good VPN services like ExpressVPN not only add strong levels of encryption to your data but also come with built-in ad and malware blockers. This can keep your device and data safe from malware while also blocking bombarding your screen.

Summing Up

Flixtor has disappeared from the scene, but there are positive signs for a return of our favorite movie streaming website soon. Meanwhile, you can satisfy your streaming urges through the Flixtor alternatives I have mentioned above and use a VPN while you’re at it to streamline your experience to a higher degree.
