If you are a true online gamer, you cannot undermine the value of Steam. It is arguably the most popular hub for purchasing, downloading, and playing graphic-intensive games.
That said, the popular gaming platform is usually blocked in most institutions like offices and schools for obvious reasons. Not only that, a lot of steam games are goe-restricted to specific countries.
Not only can you not play some games outside their designated regions, but if someone even gifts you a game from a different country, you can only redeem the gift if you’re also residing in the region.
Don’t worry, you can easily bypass geo-blocks with a powerful Steam VPN.
So on that note, I have compiled a list of a few awesome VPNs that you can use to get past Steam’s rather annoying restrictions.
But first, a brief overview…
- PureVPN – A powerful budget-friendly VPN capable of delivering top-notch bypassing features.
- Surfshark – A super affordable VPN service starting from just $1.99/mo.
- NordVPN – A VPN with over 5600 severs worldwide to help you bypass Steam’s geo-restrictions.
- ExpressVPN – A super fast VPN service to help you download and play graphic-intensive games.
- CyberGhost – A reliable VPN service with over 3200 servers worldwide.
5 Best VPNs for Steam in 2019
While there are a ton of VPN services available in the market, not all of them can help you spoof your IP to get access to geo-blocked games.
So after painstakingly filtering out tons of VPNs, I have managed to compile a list of best Steam compatible VPNs below:
First up we have PureVPN. It is one of the most powerful VPN services available in the market today.
With 2000+ servers available in 140+ countries worldwide, you can literally access any blocked content available online – not to mention games.
Aside from servers, PureVPN is also super fast. Now I’m not going to lie, a lot of their servers can be slow at times. However, their US servers are actually surprisingly fast.
So whether you plan on playing games online, or downloading it on your PC or Mac, you should have no trouble with PureVPN.
best of all, PureVPN only costs $2.95/mo and comes with a full 31-day money-back guarantee.

Why Use a VPN with Steam?
As I mentioned earlier, there are two main reasons why you’ll need a VPN for Steam. First has to do with bypassing firewalls blocking Steam and the other has to do with potentially purchasing games from other regions.
While bypassing firewalls is quite easy, purchasing games from other regions can be a bit tricky. None the less it is still possible to purchase games from other regions. That is if you don’t mind risking your Steam account.
On a lighter note, as long as you’re not faking your billing address, you can possibly purchase games from other regions as well.
You’ll just have to be pretty consistent with using the same server every time for purchasing games to avoid being caught violating steam VPN rules.
Region-wise Availability of Games in Steam
Steam offers a large catalog of fantastic video games. However, some video games are only available in certain regions.
If you want to play these games restricted in your regions, you will have to access Steam through an IP of the region where the game is available.
This can be done quite easily through a VPN. When you connect to a server from a different country through a VPN, you will be able to access all geo-restricted content from that country.
That said, it is not recommended to purchase games from other regions. In fact, it is a major no, no according to Steam’s Subscriber Agreement.
Will Steam Ban Me For Using a VPN?
Well, that depends. If you plan on spoofing your location to purchase games for cheap, you will definitely get banned. due to rigid regulations and licensing restriction issues.
However, if you’re just using a VPN to bypass firewalls, or to perhaps speed up your internet speeds, you should have nothing to worry about.
In fact, according to the response of one steam support representative, “Playing games or operating Steam while using a VPN is not strictly prohibited.”
According to SSA guidelines, you should not use a VPN or proxy service to change your location with the intent to buy games for cheap.
If you’re caught violating Steam’s terms and conditions, your profile will definitely get banned.
Steam VPN Reddit
Although I couldn’t find actual proof of people getting banned by Steam, a few people over at Reddit have mentioned incidents of people getting into trouble:
If you are unable to get a VPN to work with Steam, try the following actions:
- Shut down Steam, change VPN server, and restart Steam again
- Change VPN protocol to PPTP, SSTP, or L2TP. Try all possible protocols. Some work better than others for gaming.
- Open Steam > Settings > Account
- At the top right, click “View Account Details”
- From here you can change your store region
Note that you must also change your billing address to correspond to the new region that you have selected. Also, don’t change your region quite frequently, otherwise your account might be put on temporary cool down.
A Steam VPN has multiple benefits. You can bypass firewalls blocking Steam, you can avoid ISP throttling, and you can even purchase games from other regions.
That said, as I’ve mentioned again, purchasing games from other regions can be risky. None the less totally doable.
If you don’t change your Steam region quite frequently and fake your billing address, you’ll have no trouble purchasing or playing games from other regions. Just make sure you don’t use free VPN for steam.
