Google play is the largest marketplace for Android-based digital applications. It is every Android user’s one-stop shop to download useful mobile apps and thrilling games.

According to the statistics presented by statista.com, Google play had around 2.6 million apps in December of 2018. That’s a huge number if you ask me.

That said, that doesn’t mean you can access and download all of them unless you have a VPN (Virtual Private Network).

Why?

Well, nowadays a lot the application available on the Google Play store are geo-restricted. An app that might be available in your region might not be available in other regions.

1# PureVPN

PureVPN is probably the best VPN for unblocking geo-locked Google Play store. I’ve been personally using it for years and haven’t had any issues with it. PureVPN has around 2000+ servers in pretty much every part of the world.

Besides the huge collection of servers, PureVPN also offers rock-solid encryption to keep your identity totally discrete. This way, even if you’re accessing a regional blocked Google Play store, you won’t run into any hurdles. PureVPN is also one of the most secure VPN’s around. They don’t log user data and they also operate from a data retention free jurisdiction.

Their customer support is also excellent and always available whenever you need them. Overall I definitely recommend PureVPN if you want complete and utter freedom.

Oh! Before I forget, PureVPN is also insanely cheap and only costs $1.32 a month.

2# NordVPN

If you’ve ever Googled for “best VPN services”, you’ll most likely see NordVPN popping up in the search results. Why wouldn’t it, after all, NordVPN has over 5000 servers available all across the globe. No other provider offers these many servers.

Their servers are also highly optimized meaning you’ll pretty much always get connected to the fastest servers available. Unlike other VPN providers, NordVPN offers something called the “Double VPN”. Like the name suggest, Double VPN essentially encrypts your traffic twice meaning your identity would be twice as secure.

FYI, this is enough to even fool the super smart Google. NordVPN works exceptionally great with Google Play store. I didn’t encounter any issues while testing it for this blog. Other than that, downloading speeds were also quite great.

3# Surfshark

Next up is Surfshark. This VPN is the newest contender in the VPN industry. Yet despite being relatively new, it is certainly powerful. Now Surfshark doesn’t offer as many servers as NordVPN or PureVPN, however, I found it to be a bit faster than both of them. At the moment Surfshark offers a decent collection of 500+ servers in around 50 counties which is more than enough to access any geo-restricted application on the Play store.

Just like NordVPN, Surfshark also offers a MultiHop feature for ultimate anonymity. I also like the simplicity and responsiveness of Surfshark. Needless to say, Surfshark is the perfect companion for Google Play store.

4# CyberGhost

CyberGhost doesn’t need a formal introduction. If you’ve ever used a VPN, you’ll likely know what this VPN service is capable of. With over 3000 no logging secure servers, CyberGhost is perfect for unblocking and downloading any content or application imaginable.

CyberGhost also uses industry’s top encryption algorithm to ensure complete privacy and ultimate freedom. I particularly like the user interface of its cross-platform applications. Connection speeds are also very impressive and it also unblocks geo-restricted contents like a champ.

5# ExpressVPN

Last but not least, we have ExpressVPN. This VPN is probably amongst the most reliable and premium providers in the entire industry. Their subscription plans are a bit expensive, however, this is to be expected from upscale VPN providers.

Similar to the providers discussed before, ExpressVPN also offers quite a lot of secure servers. At the moment they offer more than 2000 servers in 94 countries worldwide.

ExpressVPN is also particularly fast so you shouldn’t have to deal with sluggish downloading speeds.

Region blocked Google Play store

Like is said, a lot of the applications on the Google Play store are restricted to certain regions. Unless you’re residing in that specific region you’ll get an error that reads: “This app is not compatible with any of your devices”.

Google is very clever at finding geo locations. It analyzes the IP address of the user requesting a certain application and only shows the applications corresponding to that specific IP. For instance, if you’re in the Middle East, you probably won’t be able to access applications available in the U.S.

However, if you use a VPN, you can spoof your location to anywhere you like. This way you can literally get a hold of any regional blocked application you might desire.

How to switch Google Playstore Region on your Android device

Switching your default Google Playstore region is super simple. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to root your Android device to swap regions. All you need is a reliable VPN service preferably the ones mentioned above and you’ll be good to go. I’ll list all of the steps down below.

  • Download and install the VPN client on your Android device.
  • Now choose a particular server location you wish to connect to (Example, U.S if you want to download applications available in the U.S Play store).
  • Once you’re connected to the server of your choice, go ahead and navigate to the Settings option on your Android device.
  • Now head into the Apps option within the Settings option and look for the Google Play Store app.
  • Tap on the Google Play Store app and Press “Clear Data” and “Force Stop” options.google-playstore-app-clear-data-and-clear-cache
  • Now exit the settings option and Relaunch the Google Play Store App.

That’s it! You can now download any application you like from the Google Play store.

How to unblock Google Play store if you’re in China

Since China bans everything Google, there is pretty much no way of downloading apps from the Google Play store. Not being able to access the Play store can be seriously frustrating which is why I’m going to tell you simple steps to unblock Google Play store in China.

  • Just as before, download and install the VPN client of your choice.
  • Launch the VPN application and enable either stealth mode or any other mode that offers strong obfuscation.
  • Once that’s done, you need to connect to a server location that doesn’t block Google Play store. Try connecting to the U.S server.

That’s it! You can now freely download your favorite apps in China.

Don’t have Google Play store services installed? Don’t worry

If you’re residing in China, there’s a chance your Android device might not have Google services installed on it. If your device doesn’t come with Google services, you won’t be able to download and install any applications from the Google Play store.

Luckily this isn’t a big deal and you won’t have to root your device either. That said, you must enable the side loading option on your Android device. You can do this by first heading over to the Settings option > Security and then enable the Unknown Sources option.

Once you’ve granted permission to download an application from unknown sources, you need to follow the steps mentioned below.

  • Download the Google Framework Services app on your device using this official link.
  • Now install the application on your device.
  • Once installed, you should get an option to install the Gmail app & Google Play Store app on your device.
  • Now accept and install both the application as usual.

Note: Since China has a permanent ban on Google products, you would have to enable the VPN every time you wish to download or update the application to your Android device.

Wrapping up!

Not being able to download your favorite apps from the Play store can be a serious pain in the neck. The fact that some application is restricted to certain regions is seriously annoying.

That said, a VPN can easily get rid of this frustrating dilemma. The above mentioned Best VPNs to access Google play and its steps have been personally tested on multiple Android devices to ensure maximum success rate.
