Attention!!
Unfortunately, Encrypt.me is no longer active in Australia. StrongVPN has acquired it. Check out some of the top VPNs that are available in Australia:

Encrypt.me – sounds high tech, doesn’t it? In all honesty, it’s one VPN service I can’t recommend you guys try in Australia. Although this provider brags a lot about features, powerful security, total anonymity, and unblocking capabilities, I don’t think their claims are entirely true in Australia.

I mean, at the time of writing this Encrypt.me review in Australia, I found that it is headquartered in the unsafe jurisdiction of the United States. In addition, I was also disappointed to see their logging policy, expensive pricing plans, and only a handful of server locations. In comparison, ExpressVPN and NordVPN pack in way more servers and features.

But the service isn’t entirely trash. While there is a lot that I don’t like about Encrypt.me in Australia, it does have its pros as well. For one, it is fast compared to a lot of VPNs. It also works quite well with Netflix and BBC iPlayer in Australia. I guess what I’m trying to say is, it doesn’t offer the best value for money. Overall, it scores 2.8/5.0 stars in this review.

Encrypt.me Review in Australia – Rating Criteria

To thoroughly test the Encrypt.me for its pros and cons, I used my 9-step rating criteria:

  1. Jurisdiction – Where is Encrypt.me located?
  2. Security – Does Encrypt.me keep logs in Australia?
  3. Leaks – Does Encrypt.me leak IP, DNS, WebRTC?
  4. Servers – Is Encrypt.me P2P compatible?
  5. Speed – How fast is Encrypt.me?
  6. Streaming – Does Encrypt.me work with Netflix in Australia?
  7. Compatibility – Which devices can I use Encrypt.me with?
  8. Pricing – How much does Encrypt.me cost in Australia?
  9. Trustworthiness – Is Encrypt.me safe to use?

Jurisdiction – Where is Encrypt.me located?

Right from the start, things don’t look too good for Encrypt.me in Australia. I mean, it is headquartered in the unsafe jurisdiction of the US, which if you don’t know, is a major part of the 5-eyes alliance. More specifically, this provider has office locations in Guadalajara, Dallas, Orlando, and Seattle.

Although I like how they’re transparent about their company, it doesn’t mean it is safe to use in Australia. Even though they claim to keep no logs, the truth of the matter is, if the NSA were to come knocking on Encrypt.me’s doors, they would have no choice but to surrender your private information. We’ll look over their logging policy in a bit, but if you want to check out something that’s based in a safe jurisdiction, check out ExpressVPN or NordVPN.

Security – Does Encrypt.me keep logs in Australia?

Yes, Encrypt.me keeps a lot of logs in Australia. But they’re not hiding the fact that they do. In fact, if you go through their Policies page, you’ll see that they clearly mention storing user logs for 16 days. But what information exactly do they log? Well, just check out this list:

  • The number of bytes sent and received
  • The length of time connected
  • The IP address connected from and the (virtual) IP we assign
  • The source port of the outgoing connection with start and end times

encrypt.me-logging-policy

That’s not all. They also collect a ton of other information about you which I won’t go into detail. Needless to say, Encrypt.me is not a “no-logs VPN“. Although I can’t stress enough not using this service because of the fact that they keep invasive logs if you still want to use it in Australia, make sure to go through their privacy policy first.

Encryption & Other Features

As for security features, you’re not going to get much with Encrypt.me in Australia. Start off with protocols and encryption, and they offer IPSec protocol for iOS and OpenVPN for macOS and Android. For Windows, they use an open-source StrongSwan protocol with a combination of IKEv1 and IKEv2. That’s all pretty standard, but I’m not sure why they don’t offer OpenVPN for Windows in Australia. Literally, every other VPN uses OpenVPN by default nowadays.

Aside from protocols, they do offer 2048bit and 1536bit DH group encryption along with a few basic features. For instance, Encrypt.me offers a built-in Kill Switch, leak protection, and Split tunneling. Speaking of Split tunneling, this feature is only available on their m0bile apps. Again, for better features that are available across all platforms alike, I highly suggest going with ExpressVPN or NordVPN.

Leaks – Does Encrypt.me leak IP, DNS, and WebRTC?

As for my leak test, Encrypt.me performed pretty well in Australia. That’s no surprise considering that it comes with built-in leak protection. In addition to that, one thing that I find interesting about this VPN is that it passed two independent audits in 2017 and 2019. Security Innovation “found zero sensitive customer information leak risk” in Encrypt.me.

IP Leak Test:

First thing first, I tested for IP leaks. To do that, I connected to the Mexican server of Encrypt.me. As you can see from the screenshot below, my default IP address is nowhere to be seen.

DNS Leak Test:

Next, I checked for DNS leaks while connected to the same Mexican server. As you can see from the screenshot below, I’m connected to Mexican DNS servers. That’s great so far.

WebRTC Leak Test:

Lastly, I also checked for WebRTC leaks and the VPN again didn’t disappoint me. Even after multiple tests, this VPN showed no signs of leaks. All in all, its built-in leak protection feature sure works.

Virus Test:

Just to be extra sure, I tested its Google Play Android app link through VirusTotal to see if it contained any viruses. Luckily, I found no malware whatsoever so that’s pretty good too.

Servers – Is Encrypt.me P2P compatible?

As for P2P, Encrypt.Me does allow torrenting in Australia. However, this provider makes it very clear that they will cooperate with law enforcement agencies concerning any illegal activity. In fact, here’s a short snippet from their policies page:

“We are subject to federal, state, and local laws and we will absolutely uphold them.

Should it ever become necessary to respond to a legal request, we will do so. We will always strive to both protect our users and uphold the law of the land.”

So keeping that in mind, I don’t think you would want to download torrents with this service. If you risk it, you will end up losing your account as per their Terms of Use. If that’s not enough, just keep in mind that they’re located in the US. And you know what that means.

If we talk about servers, again, that’s a disappointment too. They only offer some 130+ servers in 40+ countries. It offers VPN servers even in Mexico for Australian users.

In comparison, ExpressVPN and NordVPN offer thousands of servers.

Does Encrypt.Me work in China?

Well, no. I tried unblocking multiple Chinese websites like QQ and Baidu and none of them worked. Unfortunately, it didn’t manage to bypass the Great Firewall. But that’s no surprise considering that it only offers a handful of servers. So, if accessing Chinese content is important to you, I highly suggest checking out ExpressVPN which offers physical servers in Beijing and Shanghai.

Speed – How fast is Encrypt.Me?

In our Encrypt.me Review in Australia we tested this VPNs speed and Encrypt.Me performed decently fast. On my base 35 Mbps test connection, it performed better than I expected. Here’s a screenshot of my internet speeds without Encrypt.me connected:

UK Server:

First, I connected to the UK servers to perform the speed test. On average, the UK server managed to deliver around 20.34 Mbps download speed. Not bad at all if you ask me.

Canada Server:

With the Canadian server of Encrypt.me, I managed to get slightly better speeds. On average, the Canadian server managed to output around 24.46 Mbps downloading speed.

US Server:

Last but not least, with the US server, I managed to get around 22.70 Mbps downloading speed. So, Encrypt.me is not the fastest VPN around but it is still plenty fast.

Streaming – Does Encrypt.me work with Netflix in Australia?

Other than being fairly fast, Encrypt.me also surprisingly works great with American Netflix in Australia. Just check out the screenshot attached below. I tried playing a bunch of shows and didn’t encounter any proxy issues at all. The server location that worked best for me was New York.

Encrypt.me-working-with-US-Netflix

It worked great with Netflix but when we tried to unblock Disney plus from in Australia from this VPN, we came across an error ” Disney plus not working” in Australia. So, if you are choosing this VPN just for Disney plus then I would not to go with it and choose a reliable VPN like Surfshark or Expressvpn

Other Streaming Services that work with Encrypt.me

Other than American Netflix I worked with Encrypt.me, I also managed to unblock BBC iPlayer without much effort at all in Australia. Although I did encounter a few buffering issues, however, nothing that would be a deal-breaker. In the streaming category, Encrypt.me VPN is a clear winner.

Compatibility – Which devices can I use Encrypt.me with?

In terms of apps and compatibility, I found Encrypt.me to be pretty weak in Australia. Currently, it only offers apps for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. In addition, it also works with Amazon Fire TV Stick which I think is pretty good.

encrypt.me-apps-and-compatibility

But as for other operating systems and devices, you’ll be out of luck. Encrypt.me isn’t compatible with Linux or even with routers for that matter. To make up for it, they do offer unlimited multi-logins per subscription plan.

Encrypt.me for Windows & macOS

Coming over to the Windows and macOS apps in Australia of Encrypt.me, I must say, they’re very intuitive and easy to use. But one thing I found quite disappointing was the fact that the Split tunneling feature was only available on mobile versions. As for other options like leak protection and Kill Switch, they were very easy to find and enable or disable. Overall, its apps are easy enough for any newbie to use.

Encrypt.me for iOS & Android

As for the iOS and Android apps of Encrypt.me, they are quite modern looking, snappy, and easy to use. As I mentioned earlier, with the mobile app, you can enable or disable the Split tunneling feature, which is always very handy to have. Overall, both their iOS and Android apps work great and offer decent customization as well. As for app ratings, Encrypt.me has a 3.9-star rating on Google Play Store and a 4.5-star rating on the iTunes store.

Pricing – How much does Encrypt.me cost in Australia?

If we talk about pricing, Encrypt.me is overpriced. They offer two plans and both of them are quite expensive compared to other affordable options like ExpressVPN.

Here is the pricing of both plans:

encrypt.me-pricing-of-subscription-package

Let’s talk about refunds. Encrypt.me offers a 30 days refund policy which is industry standard nowadays. You will have to send an email to support@encrypt.me to get your refund in Australia. One thing to keep in mind is that if you subscribe to the VPN through an In-App purchase then you won’t be eligible for a refund.

Trustworthiness – Is Encrypt.me safe to use?

To be honest in our Encrypt.me Review in Australia, no. Encrypt.me is not safe in my opinion. First of all, as I mentioned earlier, they log a lot of data. Logs that can surely get you in trouble. Secondly, they’re based in the US which is not considered safe in terms of user privacy. But as for their Trustpilot reviews, they have a pretty decent 4.5/5.0-star rating. 60% of users have rated it as Excellent and only 4% of users have rated it as Bad.

Customer Support

Their customer support section also lacks quite a bit. Even though they offer live chat support on their website, it remained offline every time I tried to access it.

encrypt.me-live-chat-support

They do, however, offer Email ticketing and FAQ support to help you resolve most of your issues in Australia. But then again, if they’re charging so much for their service, they should at least offer better customer support. So, if you want better customer support, I think you’ll be better off with ExpressVPN or NordVPN.

Comparison between ExpressVPN and Encrypt.me in Australia

Encrypt.me Alternatives in Australia

Although Encrypt.me offers some good features, it certainly lacks in logs, customer support, and apps. If you are seeking alternatives to this VPN, do check out the list below to find better VPNs:

Do I Recommend Encrypt.me in Australia?

No, I don’t recommend this VPN at all in Australia. Even though it works with Netflix and offers a pretty decent array of features, it is still not as good as its competitors. For one, it logs a lot of user data. That’s a major red flag in the VPN industry. In comparison, there are tons of VPNs covered in our VPN reviews 2023 guide that refrains from keeping intrusive logs.

Aside from that, despite costing so much, it lacks 24/7 live chat support and compatibility with routers and Linux. Sure it is fast, but it still needs to improve its service. So after weighing in all of its pros and cons in this Encrypt.me review in Australia, I’ve given it a 2.8/5.0-star rating overall.
