Sydney, Australia –20 November 2024 – Bunnings faces backlash for illegally collecting customer biometric data via facial recognition tech. Critics urge stricter rules to balance privacy and security.
Australian retail giant Bunnings is facing a storm of criticism after the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) ruled its use of facial recognition technology violated privacy laws. The decision has spotlighted ethical concerns surrounding biometric surveillance in retail environments.
Between 2018 and 2021, Bunnings deployed facial recognition technology in 63 stores across Victoria and New South Wales, capturing facial images of hundreds of thousands of customers. According to the OAIC, the company failed to inform customers or obtain explicit consent, violating Australia’s Privacy Act.
Facial recognition technology, while beneficial for security, is disproportionately intrusive and undermines basic privacy rights.
Bunnings defended its actions, arguing the technology was a safety measure against increasing cases of violence and theft. Managing Director Mike Schneider stated:
Our goal was to safeguard our staff and customers. Privacy was never compromised as unmatched data was automatically deleted within milliseconds.
However, critics argue the practice infringes on fundamental rights. A recent report on privacy and surveillance reveals a growing public concern over invasive data collection methods, with 64% of Australians opposing biometric surveillance in retail settings.
As part of its penalty, the OAIC has ordered Bunnings to cease using facial recognition, delete all collected data within a year, and publish a detailed public statement. Meanwhile, privacy advocates are calling for stricter regulations to govern the use of surveillance technologies.
