Miami, December 12, 2024 – A breach at Byte Federal’s Bitcoin ATMs exposed data of 58,000 users. IDs, Social Security numbers, and photos were compromised, sparking security concerns.

A major data breach has rocked Byte Federal, one of the largest Bitcoin ATM operators in the U.S., exposing sensitive personal information of over 58,000 users.

The attack, traced to a vulnerability in third-party software GitLab, compromised users’ Social Security numbers, government-issued IDs, transaction histories, and even photographs.

The breach occurred on September 30 but was only discovered on November 18, leaving a dangerous window for potential exploitation. Byte Federal stated:

An independent cybersecurity firm has since launched a forensic investigation, with Byte Federal cooperating with law enforcement.

While the company claims that no user funds were affected, the exposure of such critical information raises serious concerns. A cybersecurity analyst Lisa Green said:

In response to the breach, Byte Federal reset all user accounts and advised customers to change passwords and freeze their credit to mitigate risks. Experts urge affected users to contact the three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—to place fraud alerts on their accounts.

This breach is not an isolated incident. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reports that cryptocurrency ATM scams have surged tenfold since 2020, with $65 million in losses recorded in 2024 alone.
