December 13, 2024 – In a proactive measure to counter cyber threats during the holiday season, Europol announced a significant crackdown on cybercriminals, resulting in the shutdown of 27 DDoS booters across 15 countries.
This operation, known as PowerOFF, involved collaboration with various law enforcement agencies, including the Australian Federal Police, the UK’s National Crime Agency, and the US Department of Justice, among others.
As part of this initiative, Europol has identified 300 users and arrested three administrators in France and Germany. The crackdown specifically targeted sites such as zdstresser.net, orbitalstress.net, and starkstresser.net, which were notorious for facilitating Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.
Europol highlighted that the holiday season has historically been a peak time for such cyberattacks, which can lead to severe financial losses, reputational damage, and operational chaos for victims. The agency expressed concerns over the increasing trend of DDoS attacks, particularly those aimed at critical infrastructure, noting that these attacks have amplified due to the proliferation of vulnerable Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
The shutdown of these sites is part of a broader effort to mitigate the risks posed by cybercriminals during a time when online activity typically surges.
