Istanbul, Turkey – November 18, 2024- Twitch fined $58K by Turkey’s KVKK after a 125 GB data breach exposed 35K users’ data. Security lapses and delayed reporting led to hefty penalties.

Amazon’s popular streaming platform, Twitch, has been slapped with a hefty fine of 2 million Turkish lira ($58,000) by Turkey’s Personal Data Protection Board (KVKK) after a devastating data breach compromised the personal information of 35,274 Turkish citizens.

The breach, stemming from a shocking 125 GB data leak, exposed Twitch’s glaring security lapses and inadequate risk management. The KVKK’s investigation revealed Twitch’s failure to implement robust security measures before the breach, with action only taken after the damage was done.

The breach included sensitive user data, which has since sparked outrage among the affected individuals. Twitch received a 1.75 million lira fine for its lack of security measures and an additional 250,000 lira penalty for failing to report the breach in a timely manner.

While Twitch has yet to comment on the fine, the news has ignited debates on the responsibility of global corporations operating in Turkey. As more users express concerns over their privacy, Twitch’s reputation in the region faces potential long-term damage.

For now, KVKK has sent a strong message to tech giants: compliance with data protection laws is non-negotiable.
