San Francisco, CA – 20 November 2024 – The NGioweb botnet exploits IoT devices for NSOCKS, a global proxy service fueling cybercrime. Experts urge enhanced IoT security to curb the rising threat.

A sophisticated cybercrime operation leveraging the NGioweb botnet has exposed the vulnerabilities of IoT devices, transforming them into a global proxy network for the notorious NSOCKS service. This botnet, targeting millions of small office and home routers, has become a cornerstone of underground marketplaces.

According to Lumen Technologies’ Black Lotus Labs, 80% of NSOCKS bots are powered by NGioweb, affecting IoT devices ranging from routers to cameras.

The NGioweb botnet operates by exploiting known vulnerabilities and zero-day exploits in IoT devices. Affected systems from brands like NETGEAR, Zyxel, and Hikvision are infiltrated using automated scripts, registering the devices as proxies for malicious activities.

These include distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, credential stuffing, and identity obfuscation.

A recent report on IoT vulnerabilities revealed a 65% rise in IoT attacks, underscoring the urgent need for robust device security and patch management.

NSOCKS enables cybercriminals to buy access to infected devices, selecting options like location and internet speed. Prices range from $0.20 to $1.50 per device for 24-hour access. These services have already been linked to credential-stuffing attacks on major corporations like Okta.

As the threat expands, experts emphasize the importance of securing IoT devices with regular updates and strong passwords. Lumen Technologies has started blocking traffic linked to the botnet but warns of its resilience.
