| Q: VPNRanks — Angeline, AI has made significant strides in recent years. What do you think is the most impressive capability of AI today, and how do you see it being applied in everyday life? | A: Angeline Corvaglia — Well, my answer is probably going to be different than a technical expert’s because I consider myself just an impassioned parent who learned about all the technology and AI just to help kids. Actually, the most impressive thing I’ve heard about is how social scientists are using AI to analyze large amounts of data, make informed proposals, and predict the outcomes of their proposals about society. Social scientists are largely trying to make the world a better place, but they’ve never had sufficient data to conduct their work effectively. It’s been hard for them to get the data they need, but with AI and big data, they can finally do that. I find this an incredibly positive development and use of big data in AI. I’ve seen examples, like in some countries in Africa that hadn’t conducted a census in over 80 years because they couldn’t afford it. With telephone data, they were finally able to perform an estimated census. This allowed them to create resource allocation proposals, develop urban planning, and improve social services. It’s just fantastic, really. |
| Q: VPNRanks — Data Girl and Friends make learning about online safety and AI fun for kids. What’s one of your favorite adventures or stories from the program? | A: Angeline Corvaglia — Thank you for that question! I love making topics like privacy more engaging, especially for younger learners who might find these concepts a bit abstract or challenging. I find that creating stories for kids can make complex ideas more accessible and fun. For instance, I have a new series featuring animals that go on adventures. One recent story was about a turtle who joined Instagram despite being below the age limit. A fox character was confused and questioned the turtle about it, while another character, Data Girl, explained the importance of age limits for online safety. It was a fun way to convey a serious message! I come up with the concepts myself, but I always run them by my daughter for approval. Since I use different voices for the characters, it’s crucial that they resonate with young children. My daughter helps me ensure that the voices and overall content are engaging and suitable for her age group. She acts as my quality control to make sure the stories are effective and enjoyable. |
| Q: VPNRanks — What are some simple yet effective ways parents can teach their children about online safety and AI through everyday interactions? | A: Angeline Corvaglia —Absolutely, working together and leveraging cross-generational knowledge is key. Kids are digital natives and often understand the online world better than we do. As parents, it’s important to recognize and respect that knowledge while sharing our own understanding of broader life experiences and safety.
A collaborative mindset can help bridge the gap between different generations. By approaching conversations with an open mind and acknowledging what kids already know, parents can foster better communication and trust. This way, children are more likely to engage and listen, rather than tuning out because they feel like their expertise is being underestimated. It’s about creating a partnership where both sides contribute to understanding and managing digital safety. This approach not only makes discussions more productive but also empowers kids to take responsibility for their online actions with guidance and support from their parents. |
| Q: VPNRanks — Recently, there was a significant Microsoft outage attributed to a CrowdStrike update. What are your thoughts on this incident, and what lessons can businesses learn from it? | A: Angeline Corvaglia — The recent incident highlighted the critical importance of having robust backup and recovery plans in place. Reflecting on my experience as a CFO during digital transformation efforts, I find it surprising that such widespread disruptions could occur due to inadequate backup and recovery measures. It underscores the need for businesses to develop comprehensive backup strategies, ensuring that data and systems are regularly backed up and stored securely. Equally important is having a well-defined recovery plan that outlines how to respond to data loss or system failures, including clear communication protocols and restoration steps. Additionally, evaluating third-party risks is crucial—understanding their risk management practices and having contingency plans if their services are disrupted can prevent significant impacts. Investing in redundancy for critical systems and continuously updating risk management strategies to address new threats can further safeguard against disruptions. This experience serves as a stark reminder of the necessity of proactive planning and resilient systems to protect against unforeseen events. |
| Q: VPNRanks — If you could host a panel discussion with historical figures like Alan Turing, Ada Lovelace, and Grace Hopper, what modern AI and cybersecurity issues would you ask for their opinions on? | A: Angeline Corvaglia — The rapid pace of advancements in AI raises concerns about unintended consequences that might not be fully anticipated. Reflecting on this, it seems crucial to consider how historical figures might view our current AI race. These individuals, who had profound insights into their respective fields, could offer valuable perspectives on our trajectory. They might question the direction and purpose of our efforts, as many companies are heavily investing in AI without a clear end goal or understanding of how it will ultimately benefit society. The lack of standardized rules and regulatory oversight creates a landscape where companies set their own guidelines, potentially leading to significant collateral damage and ethical dilemmas. Historical figures could provide a critical viewpoint on how we manage these challenges and offer advice on mitigating potential risks. Their insights could help us better understand and address the unintended consequences of our current technological pursuits, ensuring that we approach AI development with a more balanced and thoughtful perspective. |
| Q: VPNRanks — You’ve worked extensively with children on digital literacy. What’s the most unexpected or amusing thing a kid has asked you during one of your sessions? | A: Angeline Corvaglia — It’s fascinating how sophisticated kids can be when it comes to understanding technology, something I didn’t fully appreciate before. I had always thought of children as being somewhat naive about the complexities of the digital world. However, I’ve been surprised to find that they grasp concepts like algorithms and AI much better than I anticipated. For example, while traveling, my daughter, who isn’t heavily involved in the online world, was playing Angry Birds on a plane. When I asked her to stop after a while, she immediately recognized that the game’s design—making it difficult to stop playing—was influenced by AI. Her ability to identify AI’s role in manipulating user engagement was unexpected and eye-opening for me. It made me realize that even kids who aren’t deeply immersed in technology are still perceptive about how it affects their behavior and experiences. |
| Q: VPNRanks — If you could teleport anywhere in the world to see the latest in tech innovations, where would you go, and what would you hope to discover? | A: Angeline Corvaglia — My initial impulse was to dive into Silicon Valley to uncover the secret innovations shaping the future of AI. However, upon reflection, I realized that groundbreaking developments in AI might also be occurring in less publicized regions around the world. There’s so much happening beyond the well-trodden paths of tech hubs, and the global impact of AI is profound and diverse.Instead of focusing solely on the high-profile innovations, I would seek out places demonstrating how AI is being used for good, particularly in enhancing safety and security. For instance, AI has the potential to protect us from its own misuse—like detecting inappropriate content or mitigating cyber threats. Bill Sharo, an AI expert and the inspiration behind my character Data Girl, often emphasizes that AI could play a crucial role in safeguarding us from its own negative impacts. Seeing how AI is employed to counteract issues like social media bullying and online extortion would be incredibly encouraging. My goal would be to witness firsthand the positive applications of AI that can help ensure a safer and more secure digital environment for everyone. |
| Q: VPNRanks — For those who struggle to disconnect, what advice would you give to help them successfully enjoy a Digital Detox Sunday? | A: Angeline Corvaglia — Since I began my digital detox journey, I’ve discovered a couple of strategies that have made a significant difference for me and those I help. The first realization is the importance of having alternatives. Often, we find ourselves online simply because we can’t think of anything else to do. I noticed that when my phone was always within reach, I would automatically pick it up whenever I had a moment of idle time. To combat this, I started consciously leaving my phone behind or even at home. This small change helped me understand that it’s perfectly fine to be without it. If we can find alternative activities or interests, we’re less likely to default to mindlessly scrolling through our devices. The second insight came from exploring the concept of dopamine and its effects. I’ve been reading books like Dopamine Nation” and Happy Families,” which delve into how our digital habits stimulate dopamine, making it challenging to disconnect. These readings revealed that there’s a period of adjustment when you first cut back on these dopamine-releasing activities. Knowing this, I prepared myself for the initial discomfort of detoxing. Understanding that it gets easier after the first half-hour made the process more manageable. By physically removing my devices from easy reach, I reduced the temptation to pick them up out of habit. These strategies have been invaluable in making digital detoxing a more effective and sustainable practice. |
| Q: VPNRanks — You’re set to speak at MidwestCon 2024. Can you give us a sneak peek into the topics you’ll be discussing and what you hope the attendees will take away from your session? | A: Angeline Corvaglia — In discussing the need to address the unintended consequences of the AI revolution, especially concerning the next generation, it’s crucial to emphasize the importance of dedicated resources for analysis and counteraction. At Midwest Con, I plan to highlight this necessity, focusing on the potential impacts of AI on mental health, social-economic gaps, and ethical boundaries. Although the audience at such events may already be attuned to these issues, I aim to shed light on the often-overlooked consequences, such as the effects of AI chatbots on mental health. Many young people—and adults—might struggle to distinguish between human-like responses from AI and genuine human interaction, potentially leading to unhealthy dependencies. Moreover, I will address the broader implications of AI on privacy, ethical norms, and socio-economic inequalities. It is crucial to invest more resources into understanding and mitigating these issues. One key message I hope to convey is the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling these challenges. The tech industry is vast and complex, and no single entity can address these problems alone. By working together and leveraging each other’s strengths, we can better combat the negative effects of AI and ensure that we create a more equitable and safe digital future. This collective approach will be essential for addressing the wide-ranging impacts of AI and supporting vulnerable populations effectively. |
| Q: VPNRanks — If you could put one piece of AI technology into a time capsule to be opened 50 years from now, what would it be and why? | A: Angeline Corvaglia — Before addressing the last question, I want to express how much I appreciate the depth and thoughtfulness of your inquiries. They truly challenge and inspire reflection. The question at hand, in particular, has prompted me to consider a range of complex issues. If I had the chance to pause everything for 50 years, I would choose to focus on advancing our understanding and education about AI. While AI brings many benefits, there is a significant gap in public awareness regarding how to recognize and interact safely with these technologies. This lack of understanding could have far-reaching consequences for society and individuals alike.I dream of a future where we have robust educational programs in place to better equip people with the knowledge they need to navigate the AI landscape responsibly. We are currently far from this ideal, but if we could envision a scenario 50 years ahead, I believe we would see such education integrated into our systems.
Regarding AI chatbots, which are increasingly replacing human interactions, I find them both fascinating and concerning. I frequently use various AI chatbots for brainstorming and idea testing, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Copilot Gemini. While they provide valuable assistance, they also simulate human-like responses without genuine emotional understanding. This simulation can be misleading, especially when AI is used as a companion or therapist. There is a growing concern about the potential dangers of such technologies if users do not fully grasp their limitations. For instance, research on the social impacts of AI chatbots like Replica has revealed that some users have formed deep emotional connections with these bots, which can be distressing when functionalities are abruptly altered or removed. A notable case involved the Italian government suing the company and leading to the removal of certain features, which left users feeling as if they had experienced a personal loss. This situation highlights the need for greater awareness and education on the nature of AI interactions to prevent emotional and psychological impacts. If we could pause the rapid development of these technologies until we have better frameworks and understanding, it would be immensely beneficial. |
